SEMICON Europa 2022 (Munich, 15-17 November) attendees gathered at the Executive Forum for the Opening Ceremony on day one to hear from industry leaders and gain insights into the latest market and technology trends.

ISS Europe 2022 featured a new program and event format with industry insights and strategic topics condensed into one day of programming on 3 critical challenges facing the microelectronics industry: the energy crisis and sustainability, supply chain disruptions, and the talent pipeline shortage.

With semiconductor sales expected to double to $1.2 trillion USD in the next 10 years, the microelectronics industry must address rising geopolitical trade tensions, countries pursuing chip supremacy ahead of global supply chain collaboration, and talent shortfalls noted Ajit Manocha, CEO of SEMI.

After ther disruption caused by COVID-19, four of SEMI’s seven flagship events, SEMICON Europa, SEMICON West, SEMICON Japan, and SEMICON Taiwan are set to welcome back exhibitors and visitors to show floors starting in mid-November.

On April 21, 2021, the European Commission put forward the long-awaited Proposal for a Regulation on a European approach for Artificial Intelligence, introducing for the first time harmonized rules for the development, placement and use of secure and ethical artificial intelligence (AI) in Europe.

METIS identifies 4 focus areas for workforce development: True capability of AI and Data Science, Ethics, Cross-disciplinary Skills required for AI, and Climate Change, Sustainable Development Goals, and Social Inclusion Training.

METIS, a Sector Skills Alliance project co-funded by the European Commission’s Erasmus+ Program and coordinated by SEMI, recently launched an online questionnaire aimed at gauging the skills and expertise the industry needs to drive continued growth over the next five years.

In February 2020, the European Commission published its initial proposal – White Paper on Artificial Intelligence: a European approach to excellence and trust – and opened a stakeholder consultation. In June, SEMI Europe, based on member feedback, made key policy recommendations in response.

50 members of the recently formed Microelectronics Training, Industry and Skills (METIS) consortium met for the first time in November 2019 to lay out the broad outlines of their work to develop a comprehensive strategy for bridging the skills gap in Europe’s microelectronics industry.

With the rise of AI, governments worldwide are accelerating the implementation of data economy and regulations to protect sensitive data traversing AI networks. The European Commission is making progress with initiatives aimed at improving the efficient use of data across the EU.
