SEMI and MOST Join Hands to Promote Precision Health
Fusing Cutting-Edge Semiconductor and Biomedical Applications to Usher in the ‘Next Big Thing’ for Taiwan
HSHINCHU – October 12, 2021 – SEMICON Taiwan 2021 Smart MedTech Forum co-hosted by SEMI and Taiwan’s Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) that starts tomorrow will be graced by an all-star lineup of speakers from the world’s largest medical device company - Medtronic, one of Fortune’s fastest-growing companies for two years in a row - ON Semiconductor (osemi), as well as three Taiwanese biomedical startups, including JelloX biotech, Singular Wings Medical, and Neurobit Technologies. In addition to sharing thoughts on the local and international smart healthcare markets and the latest technologies, they will also talk about what strategies to be taken for transnational industries to go deep in smart healthcare, and some of the achievements from cross-discipline biomedical innovations and cooperation, and future prospects. With big data and AI technologies advancing rapidly, the idea of smart healthcare is also transforming, from focusing on treatment to preventive medicine and pre-emptive care. Precision health that caters to individual needs of patients is expected to be the blue ocean market for the future, and members of the government, industry, academia and research institutes all see it as a deciding factor that might take Taiwan’s healthcare industry to the next level.
In recent years, a huge progress has been made in advanced semiconductor manufacturing processes and high performance computing (HPC) chipsets. Many big international companies are taking the lead in introducing semiconductors and information and communications technology (ICT) into the medical field, developing chips for health screening, bio-sensors, wearable devices and other products. This kind of cross-border cooperation between semiconductors and the biomedical community is the driving force for further development of smart healthcare. According to Medtronic, semiconductor applications in smart healthcare will register a 10.2% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) from 2021 to 2026, whereas semiconductors contributed significantly, up to US$5.8 billion, to the sales of the medical terminal market in 2020.
“Demographic structure changing coupled with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic really have posed a great challenge to the world that we live in, catapulting smart medicine, precision health and other digital solutions to the center stage for our future,” said Terry Tsao, Global Chief Marketing Officer at SEMI and President of SEMI Taiwan. “Taiwan has the world’s most comprehensive semiconductor industry supply chain, some of the best ICT electronics manufacturers, and a solid healthcare ecosystem that nurtures top clinical health professionals, so I really see a great potential for us to take digital medicine one step further. SEMI will continue to work closely with the MOST to foster cross-industry exchanges and together bring in more semiconductor technologies to the medical field and transform how medical services are provided. It is hoped in doing so that Taiwan can work as the international community’s best partner in driving all kinds of smart healthcare applications, and jointly promoting the development of the global health industry.”
Minister Tsung-Tsong Wu of MOST pointed out: “In order to promote the development of precision health related industries, the Taiwan government has drafted relevant regulations and policies, established a smart medicine regulatory sandbox, and formed a smart hospital alliance. These changes also aim to encourage and assist companies in investing in precision health industry, drive the transformation of biomedical industry, and develop the next major industry in Taiwan’s economic growth.”
SEMICON Taiwan 2021 Smart MedTech Forum Gathers Global Giants and Taiwanese Startups
SEMICON Taiwan 2021 Smart MedTech Forum that starts off online tomorrow will cover a variety of applications of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and big data in precision medicine, while other issues including how to incorporate microelectronics into healthcare via a cross-industry collaborative model, remote healthcare solutions used during the pandemic, 3D digital pathology imaging and AI aided diagnosis, and digital health solution to differentiating between peripheral and central causes of vertigo will also be discussed. It is hoped that through cross-industry technical exchanges can all of us come together and establish a new healthcare ecosystem in Taiwan that facilitates “cross-field cooperation, upgrade of services, precision medicine, preventive care and health promotion” for a better future.

About SEMI
SEMI connects more than 2,400 member companies and 1.3 million professionals worldwide to advance the technology and business of electronics design and manufacturing. SEMI members are responsible for the innovations in materials, design, equipment, software, devices, and services that enable smarter, faster, more powerful, and more affordable electronic products. Since 1970, SEMI has built connections that have helped its members prosper, create new markets, and address common industry challenges together. In addition to its rich experiences in the microelectronics industry chain, SEMI established SEMI Energy in 2008, a cross-discipline exchange platform for the industry, government, academia, and research institutes that works with the only and the most comprehensive renewable energy ecosystem in Taiwan (three green energy supply chains - solar PV, wind power, smart energy storage and grid included), while facilitating green energy policy discussion and technology exchanges between the government and industry. SEMI also launched an energy industry committee that focuses on policy advocacy, and brings together plenty of opinion leaders through regular meetings annually to make sure that members in the industry can communicate and cooperate closely to achieve the sustainable development goals. In these two years, in response to the government's energy policy, the committee has taken its services even further to hydrogen power and fuel cells, green finance and other renewable energy fields, committed to becoming Taiwan's largest renewable energy exchange platform for the industry, government, academia, and research institutes, thereby taking Taiwan's renewable energy industry to the next level.
