SEMI Foundation Launches Global Chip the Future Challenge™ to Inspire the Next Generation of Semiconductor Innovators

MILPITAS, Calif. — November 6, 2026 — The SEMI Foundation today announced the launch of the Chip the Future Challenge™, a new global competition inviting undergraduate and graduate students to bring their ideas, research, and technical creativity to some of the most important opportunities shaping the future of the semiconductor industry.

Open to university students around the world, the competition challenges participants to move beyond the classroom and apply their knowledge to real-world semiconductor needs. Students can explore areas ranging from chip design and semiconductor manufacturing to artificial intelligence hardware, advanced packaging, emerging technologies, and new applications for microelectronics.

“The semiconductor industry has always been built by people willing to imagine what comes next,” said Shari Liss, Vice President of Global Workforce Development and Initiatives at SEMI. “Chip the Future Challenge gives the next generation of engineers, researchers, and innovators an opportunity to put their ideas in front of industry leaders and show us how they would help shape the future. We want students around the world to see themselves as active contributors to this industry and its next breakthroughs.”

Participants may compete individually or in teams of up to five through one of two competition tracks:

  • Research Challenge: Students present original research that advances semiconductor science, engineering, manufacturing, or real-world applications.
  • Innovation Challenge: Students develop an original semiconductor solution designed to address an industry challenge or create measurable value through innovation.

Selected teams will advance from an initial abstract submission into a development phase, where concepts can evolve into validated research, simulations, prototypes, or other technical solutions. Finalists will present their work for evaluation by leaders from across the semiconductor industry.

Projects will be assessed across five areas: relevance and clarity, innovation and originality, application and industry impact, design and implementation, and presentation and communication. Participants will also have opportunities to gain exposure to semiconductor experts, receive industry feedback, strengthen their professional networks, and demonstrate how their academic work can translate into industry impact.

The competition will award $10,000 in total prizes, with $5,000 for first place, $3,000 for second place, and $2,000 for third place. The inaugural Chip the Future Challenge is supported by Micron Technology and Galatek, helping connect emerging talent and ideas with a global industry built on continuous innovation.

“Today's young innovators bring fresh perspectives and a willingness to challenge conventional approaches to some of the semiconductor industry's most important challenges,” said Oranna Yauw, R&D Director at Galatek Technologies Singapore. “As advances in AI, advanced packaging, and next-generation computing continue to drive demand for innovation, we need talent that can think across disciplines and translate ideas into real-world impact. Through our partnership with the SEMI Foundation on the Chip the Future Challenge, Galatek is proud to support and inspire the next generation of engineers, researchers, and innovators who will help shape the future of semiconductors."

Registration for the Chip the Future Challenge opened September 1, 2026. Project abstracts are due November 14, 2026, with finalists announced December 1. Final challenge submissions are due January 31, 2027, and winners will be announced March 31, 2027.

Participants retain ownership of their intellectual property throughout the competition. University students, faculty members, semiconductor companies, and other organizations are encouraged to share the opportunity with emerging researchers and innovators around the world.

“We created the Chip the Future Challenge because students around the world are already thinking about problems that will shape the future of our industry, and they deserve a platform to bring those ideas forward,” said Shan Loy, Program Director, Global Workforce Development at SEMI Foundation. “This competition is an invitation to take what you’re learning, push it further, and show us what you think is possible. I’m excited to see the creativity, technical thinking, and new perspectives this next generation of innovators brings to the semiconductor industry.”
