▲Industry Leaders to Explore How AI Can Advance Energy-Efficient Manufacturing at SEMICON Taiwan 2025

AI Powers Green Transformation in Global Semiconductor Industry

As computing power requirements continue to climb, the need for sustainable manufacturing has come into sharper focus. Institutions such as the International Energy Agency (IEA) stress the urgency of transitioning away from energy-intensive processes, while governments and leading tech companies worldwide have set net-zero roadmaps. This is driving upstream supply chains to adopt low-carbon and circular-economy solutions, making green transformation the common language of global competitiveness.

As the core of the global supply chain, Taiwan is leveraging AI to boost energy efficiency, recycle water, reduce pollution, and recover e-waste. Backed by the government’s NT$100 billion “AI 10 Major Projects”, expected to generate NT$7 trillion in output by 2028, Taiwan is advancing smart manufacturing and green technologies. With a carbon fee trial set for 2025 and full rollout in 2026, Taiwan is aligning with global sustainability policies while strengthening its long-term competitiveness.

Collaboration Across the Supply Chain: The Key to Sustainability

“Facing the sustainability challenges of the AI era, going it alone is no longer enough – green transformation requires collaboration across the entire supply chain,” said Terry Tsao, Global Chief Marketing Officer and President of Taiwan, SEMI. “Taiwan’s complete semiconductor ecosystem is one of its greatest advantages in driving sustainable transformation. As a pivotal industry platform, SEMICON Taiwan 2025 will bring together solution providers spanning smart manufacturing, power materials, and green supply chains. With this ecosystem as our foundation, we aim to position Taiwan as a leading force in advancing AI-driven sustainable computing worldwide.”

PHOENIX, Arizona - August 12, 2025 - The SEMI Foundation, the nonprofit arm of SEMI, today announced the launch of SEMIquest, an immersive, hands-on STEM experience designed to ignite curiosity and connect Arizona’s students to the vast career opportunities in the semiconductor industry. Featured as a special exhibition at the Arizona Science Center, SEMIquest will be showcased on October 9 in conjunction with SEMICON West 2025, which will be hosted in Phoenix for the first time—bringing global attention to Arizona’s rapidly growing role in semiconductor manufacturing and innovation.

SEMIquest is part of the SEMI Foundation’s national and global effort to build a future-ready workforce for the semiconductor and microelectronics industry. The SEMI Foundation leads high-impact programs, from regional talent development through the National Network for Microelectronics Education (NNME), to employer engagement and apprenticeships through the SEMI Career & Apprenticeship Network (SCAN), to upskilling and reskilling through SEMI University (SEMI U).

“Arizona is right at the heart of the semiconductor boom, and we want students here to know they belong in this industry, in this future,” said Shari Liss, Vice President of Global Workforce Development and Initiatives at SEMI. “SEMIquest brings our mission to life in a hands-on, local way, connecting classrooms to cleanrooms, and turning curiosity into career paths.”

Where Learning Meets Opportunity

The SEMI Foundation designed SEMIquest to serve as a launchpad for the next generation of innovators. The October 9 experience will welcome students in grades 7–12, educators, families, and community organizations to a full day of interactive, career-connected learning, including:

  • A pop-up exhibition featuring real-world semiconductor applications
  • Micro:Bit coding workshops and hands-on STEM activities
  • “A Day in the Life” industry spotlights with professionals working in the field
  • Guided tours of SEMICON West, one of the most influential global conferences in technology
  • Educator-focused training and classroom resources from partners like NXP Semiconductors and Spark Photonics

To ensure these opportunities reach beyond one day and one city, the SEMIquest Pop-Up Exhibition will be featured in the Arizona Science Center from October 1, 2025 to January 4, 2026. During this time, elements of the exhibition will also travel to communities across Arizona, offering hands-on demonstrations and interactive activities to thousands more students, families, and educators.

“SEMIquest is about lighting that STEM spark early, helping students see what’s possible and giving them a real window into semiconductor industry careers they might never have considered,” said Perla DeBaggis, Senior Specialist, Career & Industry Awareness Navigator at the SEMI Foundation. “Working hand-in-hand with industry partners across the state, the Arizona Science Center team and educator communities across Arizona, the program makes the semiconductor world tangible, exciting, and real for every student who walks through the door.”

Registration is now open for schools, educators, families, and organizations to be part of Arizona’s biggest STEM experience of the year. Space is limited. To learn how to get involved, contact Perla DeBaggis at [email protected].

SEMI & NBMCProposals should address foundational technologies for extreme environments, including advanced materials, power management, and edge computing—along with biosignal sensing and user interface technologies, real-time monitoring of industrial bioprocesses, and bio-inspired sensors capable of detecting a broad spectrum of environmental threats. RFP topics were selected based on a strategic technical gap analysis conducted by NBMC.

This initiative is part of a collaborative program between SEMI and the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL). Selected projects will receive awards ranging from $250,000 to $750,000.

NBMC encourages proposals that address one or more of the above topic areas and aim to close identified technical gaps. Submissions may range from high-risk, novel innovations to evolutionary enhancements of existing capabilities. Projects should aim to raise the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) and Manufacturing Readiness Level (MRL) of the targeted solutions in alignment with the goals of RFP topics.

Following the white paper review process, selected organizations will be invited to submit full proposals. The evaluation criteria include:

  • Technical rationale and innovation
  • Budget and cost realism
  • Collaborative value
  • Dual-use applicability (commercial and Air Force/DoD)
  • Alignment with RFP technical priorities
  • Schedules and milestones
  • Tangible deliverables
  • Overall proposal quality

Proposals will also be evaluated based on the proposing organization’s capabilities, past performance, and team strength.

NBMC will host a live webinar to review the RFP and submission process on

  • August 8, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. PDT

Registration is open to all interested parties, and a recording will be made available following the event.

NBMC encourages collaborative proposals involving industry partners, research institutions, and academic teams. All NBMC-funded projects require cost sharing from recipients. Development partners retain full ownership of any intellectual property developed under the NBMC contract.

White papers, the first stage in the application process, are due by August 28, 2025.

For full details, visit the NBMC 2025 RFP webpage.
