  • SEMICON India will be co-located with electronica India and productronica India
  • The partnership augments the efforts by the government of India to propel India’s semiconductor ecosystem

MUNICH, Germany  November 17, 2023  Messe München India, the Indian subsidiary of Messe München GmbH and a leading organizer of trade fairs in India, and SEMI, the global industry association advancing growth for 3,000 member companies and helping the semiconductor industry deploy lifechanging tech worldwide, have officially inked a partnership agreement to host SEMICON® India expositions. The event will be co-located with electronica India and productronica India, thereby creating Southeast Asia’s single largest platform for showcasing the latest advancements in the electronics and semiconductor industries.

The collaboration comes in the wake of the earlier announcements by the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) at the SemiconIndia 2023 event in Gandhinagar, and subsequently at the curtain raiser event of SEMICON India during electronica India and productronica India 2023 in Bengaluru, signaling a significant stride in advancing India's domestic semiconductor ecosystem and connecting it to the global industry.

India has emerged as an attractive destination for semiconductor manufacturing and sourcing due to its rapidly expanding domestic market, demand for new-age electronics including electric vehicles, and a fast-developing supply chain for machinery, components, assembly, testing, and many other specialized products and services.

Giving a sense of the opportunities that await participants at SEMICON India, Bhupinder Singh, CEO, Messe Muenchen India, said, “India’s demand for semiconductors is valued at $24 billion today, and this is likely to emerge as a $110 billion opportunity by 2030. This explains the initiatives by global semiconductor companies to enter the Indian market. As the organisers of South Asia’s largest trade fair for electronics manufacturing – electronica India and productronica India, we are excited to work with SEMI to host SEMICON India. It will be a vital event for the semiconductor industry in India, providing a platform for companies across the semiconductor ecosystem to showcase their latest products and technologies, and to network with potential customers and partners. MILPITAS, Calif. – November 13, 2023 – The global semiconductor manufacturing industry is on track for recovery in the fourth quarter of 2023, setting the stage for continued growth in 2024, SEMI announced today in its Q3 2023 publication of the Semiconductor Manufacturing Monitor (SMM) Report, prepared in partnership with TechInsights.

Electronic sales are predicted to register a robust 22% quarter-over-quarter increase in Q4 2023, adding to 7% growth posted in Q3 2023. IC sales are expected to rise 4% sequentially after improving 7% in Q3 2023 as end demand improves and inventories normalize.

Logo

Despite the improvement in electronics and IC sales, semiconductor manufacturing indicators remain soft. Fab utilization rates and capital expenditures continue to decline in the second half of this year. Overall, CapEx on non-memory is expected to outperform memory in 2023, but even spending in the non-memory segments has begun to weaken. Total capital expenditures in Q4 2023 are hovering at the levels seen in Q4 2020.

While overall semiconductor capital equipment sales are declining in line with capital expenditures, the contraction in wafer fab equipment spending has turned out to be much shallower than expected this year. Furthermore, back-end equipment billings are projected to increase in Q4 2023.

“While semiconductor markets have seen year-over-year declines the last five quarters, year-over-year growth is expected to return in the fourth quarter of 2023 as production cuts have worked their way through the supply chain,” said Boris Metodiev, Director of Market Analysis at TechInsights. “On the other hand, front-end equipment sales have been performing much better than the IC market, buoyed by government incentives and the filling of backlogs, strength expected to continue next year.”

“Despite low fab utilization rates and slowing capital expenditures in the second half of 2023, we expect back-end equipment billings to bottom in Q4 2023,” said Clark Tseng, Senior Director of Market Intelligence at SEMI. “This will mark an important turnaround for the chip manufacturing industry, signaling a recovery from the downturn with building momentum in 2024.”

MILPITAS, Calif. – November 2, 2023 – The MEMS & Sensors Industry Group (MSIG), a SEMI Technology Community, today announced a Request for Proposals (RFP) for advanced technology development of positioning, navigation and timing (PNT) components and systems, including their manufacture. Review the full RFP for more information about the proposal submission process.

ImageThe MSIG PNT program, a public-private partnership between SEMI and the U.S. Army Research Laboratory, advances solutions that pinpoint the position of mobile and stationary assets and enable their navigation under critically important situations.

When a GPS signal is lost, current solutions in the marketplace use inertial measurement units (IMUs) to maintain positioning accuracy. However, over time, accumulated errors make position determination unreliable.

SEMI MSIG anticipates announcing multiple awards to teams or U.S. organizations with a wide range of research and development capabilities. White paper proposals are due November 28, 2023 at 5:00pm PST.

The MSIG Technical Council has identified specific thrust areas for focus:

  • Thrust Area 1: Novel Materials, Fabrication, Packaging, and Testing Techniques for Low-SWaP Inertial and PNT Sensors
  • Thrust Area 2: Advanced Active and Passive Integrated Photonics for Low-SWaP Atomic Clocks, Quantum Systems, and PNT Sensors
  • Thrust Area 3: Advancements Towards Low-SWaP-C, GPS-Free PNT Technologies

Subject matter experts from the SEMI MSIG Technical Advisory and Governing Councils and the U.S Department of Defense will evaluate, prioritize, review, and manage the proposals and their resulting projects. Funding granted by SEMI MSIG must be matched with funds in the form of cash and in-kind contributions from the grant recipient to cover total project costs. On average, the industry has covered nearly 60% of the funding for the previous PNT development projects.

“We invite proposals of leading-edge innovation,” said Tim Brosnihan, executive director of SEMI MSIG. “We look forward to proposals that push the state-of-the-art in MEMS devices and their manufacture.”

The intent of the R&D funding is to identify new PNT approaches and technologies for GPS-denied environments. Emphasis will be placed on system solutions, including but not limited to software, sensor fusion, cost-effective process innovation, advanced packaging solutions, component innovations, and disruptive materials development.

R&D funding may cover software, hardware, and advanced packaging requirements of optical and MEMS-based positioning and timing systems that improve bias stability and reduce sensor noise. Technical solutions will need to meet the system-level performance necessary to advance the state of the art.

SEMI MSIG will provide more details about the RFP during a webinar on November 14, 2023, 8:00-9:00am PST.
