... Public-private partnerships (PPPs) are vital in the global journey to net zero. Governments provide policy direction, regulation, and incentives, while private entities offer innovation, technology, and investment. The public sector provides the platform for collaboration while securing finance and reducing residual risk. These multiparty collaborations accelerate the deployment of renewable energy, sustainable infrastructure, and low-carbon solutions. These partnerships enable scalability of green initiatives and drive systemic change. Achieving net zero requires unprecedented coordination—PPPs bridge gaps, mobilize funding, and bring together expertise from all sectors, making them indispensable for building a resilient, low-carbon future. This panel will focus on specifics around how can we synchronize and step up our efforts together for a mutually resilient industry and environment.

PFAS and Other Essential Chemistries: Achieving our Environmental Goals While Supporting Necessary Industry Growth

... Regulations to restrict chemicals such as PFAS used in the semiconductor industry are poised to exacerbate supply chain disruptions and impact countless sectors that rely on chips. SEMI Working Groups have been steadily making progress the last few years towards earning necessary regulatory derogations and critical use exemptions, which will allow the semiconductor industry to continue making the chips essential to modern life. However, even if the semiconductor industry earns regulatory relief, there is a real threat that other pressures (litigation, consumer/NGO expectations, insurability, share of voice/market share, etc.) may lead to additional PFAS suppliers following others in ceasing production. SEMI Working Groups are actively driving to identify and investigate supply chain vulnerabilities. In parallel, regional governments, informed by SEMI and its members, are launching research programs to accelerate the development of alternatives and advance progress on environmental controls, but more funding from across all manufacturing regions is required. In this session, we will work to understand how industry and regulators can work together to maintain the strong growth required to support the critical industries that depend on semiconductors while also achieving environmental goals. We will work to develop an understanding of the strengths and weaknesses per region and identify the gaps, including research funding, and opportunities for policy makers to support global and regional industry-academia partnerships to achieve sustainability goals and accelerate the research and development of PFAS alternatives and environmental controls.
