MILPITAS, Calif. – January 25, 2022 – SEMI, the industry association serving the global electronics design and manufacturing supply chain, today applauded the introduction of the America Competes Act of 2022 in the United States House of Representatives. The bill includes funding for the Creating Helpful Incentives to Produce Semiconductors for America (CHIPS) Act, earmarked to strengthen U.S. semiconductor manufacturing and research.
“We are very pleased to see the House move forward to introduce the America Competes Act of 2022 including robust funding for the CHIPS Act programs,” said Ajit Manocha, SEMI president and CEO. “The bill also ensures equipment and materials suppliers can access the Section 9902 grant program, which will strengthen the semiconductor supply chain in the United States to meet the challenges of the twenty-first century. These programs will attract new manufacturing facilities – both chip fabs and upstream suppliers – and support technologies that countless industries in the U.S. and around the world depend on. The bill will also bolster workforce development programs, helping to equip workers with the skills needed in today’s semiconductor industry. We look forward to working with Congress and the Biden Administration to enact this funding into law.”
“Additionally, we urge quick action on the Advanced Manufacturing Investment Credit and restoration of the ability to immediately deduct research expenses which was removed at the start of this year,” Manocha said.

"After record-breaking billings of North America-based semiconductor equipment manufacturers in November 2021, December billings remained robust and were the second-highest ever,” said Ajit Manocha, SEMI president and CEO. “For the first time, billings topped $3 billion every month of the year, nearing $4 billion by year end, demonstrating unprecedented demand and exceptional execution by equipment suppliers.”
Themed Resilient Europe: Semiconductors Enabling a Sustainable Digital Life, ISS Europe 2022 will examine economic, technology, market, business, and geopolitical developments and trends influencing the global electronics manufacturing industry, along with their implications for strategic business decisions.
“The industry reported double-digit year-over-year revenue growth for Q3 2021,” said Walden C. Rhines, Executive Sponsor of the SEMI Electronic Design Market Data report. “Geographically, all regions reported double-digit growth, with product categories CAE, Printed Circuit Board and Multi-Chip Module, SIP, and Services also showing double-digit growth.”
“The new projects push the limits of technology in ways that are not funded by private sector alone, illustrating the vital importance of the SEMI FlexTech program in evolving FHE technology development across multiple high-growth industries,” said Gity Samadi, Director of R&D Programs for SEMI FlexTech. “Flexible hybrid electronics help transform traditional rigid products into devices that are conforming, highly reliable, and often more sustainable.”
“Semiconductors must remain at the core of Europe’s industrial and technological ambitions,” said Laith Altimime, president of SEMI Europe. “With the launch of the
The fab equipment spending increase in 2022 would follow a 39% jump in 2021 and 17% in 2020. The industry last saw three consecutive years of growth from 2016 to 2018, more than 20 years after logging a three-year run in the mid-1990s.
“SEMI continues to make the health and safety of event attendees our top priority,” said David Anderson, president of SEMI Americas and host of ISS. “We have followed recommended safety guidelines since the pandemic hit and successfully hosted many onsite events in the U.S. and around the world, but we felt it best to reschedule ISS due to current circumstances. We look forward to convening in April at Half Moon Bay to help companies across the semiconductor supply chain navigate challenges and seize business and innovation opportunities in the year ahead.”
SEMI Europe President Laith Altimime and Soitec CEO Paul Boudre, vice chair of the SEMI Europe Advisory Board, sent a letter to Emmanuel Macron, president of the French Republic, to request that the upcoming French Presidency of the Council of the European Union make it a key priority to encourage deeper collaboration among member states in the interest of advancing the semiconductor industry.
