Gavin Horn is a Senior Director in Wireless Research at Qualcomm leading the cellular upper layer design, evaluation and standardization including network architecture, security, slicing, cloud/virtualization, radio interface and protocols. Since 2014, he has been leading the 5G upper layer research as part of the successful completion in Dec 2017 non-standalone and June 2018 standalone standardization preparing for NR commercial deployments in 2019. Gavin joined Qualcomm in 2003 contributing to the upper layer design for 4G including many of the advanced features such as femtos, relays, unlicensed and D2D. Since 2008 he has worked in system design, prototyping, and standardization of LTE and LTE-advanced. Gavin received his PhD from Caltech in 1999. Prior to joining Qualcomm, Gavin worked at Digital Fountain and Pulsent. He holds more than 200 granted patents.
