Cybersecurity, Sustainability, Standards and more at SEMICON West 2023
Standards Enabling Paths Forward
By Paul Trio, Director, Standards, SEMI
SEMICON West 2023 returns to San Francisco on July 11-13 with a focus on “Building a Path Forward.” The event focuses on key challenges affecting the global microelectronics industry which include Supply Chain Disruptions, Climate Change, and Talent Shortages, all necessary to enable a $1T industry. Sessions & programs, including a daily CEO Summit, centered around three key industry priorities: Path to $1T, Path to Net Zero, and Path for Talent.
Under Path to $1T, there will be sessions on Smart Manufacturing, Flexible Hybrid Electronics, and the Test Vision Symposium just to name a few. Of course, we have the North & South Moscone Exhibit Halls allowing West attendees and exhibitors to outreach, (re)connect, and engage. We are also excited to feature a Global Cybersecurity Forum taking place on Wednesday, July 12, themed “Securing the Future for Semiconductor Manufacturing.” Featuring CISOs and industry thought leaders, this forum will address industry wide Cybersecurity status, risks, impacts and highlight plans to collaborate together to protect our semiconductor industry. The session will also cover our SEMI E187 and E188 cybersecurity standards.
Under Path to Net Zero, there will be sessions on sustainability, climate equity & social impact, as well as the EHS Forum. Another SEMICON West mainstay are TechTALK sessions. For example, on Tuesday, July 11 a TechTALK session on “Sustainable Synergy: Balancing Semiconductor Growth and Environmental Sustainability” addresses the challenge of balancing increased demand for electronic materials for semiconductor manufacturing with increasingly stringent regulatory requirements for greenhouse gases. Panelists will discuss how current regulatory standards and emerging climate policy trends align with opportunities to reduce emissions in the near term and invest in the development of climate-friendly substitutes over the longer term.
Under Path to Talent, we will have our Workforce Pavilion featuring programs focused on workforce development and diversity, equity, and inclusion. This year, we are excited to bring: “Chip In” – Roadtrip Nation’s newest documentary series. Last year, three aspiring microelectronics professionals took a road trip across the USA to discover how to make an impact in the semiconductor industry. On Thursday, July 13, in an exclusive 'Chip In' documentary panel, the Roadtrippers will discuss their journey. Panelists will share insights and inspiration from the industry professionals they interviewed, as well as highlights from the documentary. "Chip In" was made possible by the SEMI Foundation.
For Standards, we plan to offer more training courses this year, called STEPs (Standards Technical Education Program), that address how standards are used and offer insight to implementations benefiting manufacturing operations as well as supplier-customer relationships. Ultimately, STEP courses help raise industry awareness of our Standards and also help build our “standards developer workforce.” In collaboration with the MEMS & Sensors Industry Group, a webinar featuring SEMI MS14, a new standard for gas sensors, was held last May.
Standards Enabling Paths Forward
As we gear up for SEMICON West, I wish to invite you to join our North America Standards meetings taking place on July 10-14 on the upper floors of the Moscone South Hall. We will be hosting 9 Technical Committees and over 50 Task Forces. EHS Standards meetings will include Environmental Performance Rating TF, S23 Task Force, S2 Major Revision TF, and many more. Our Information & Control (I&C) meetings will include: Fab & Equipment Computer and Device Security (CDS) TF, Equipment Data Publication (EDP) TF, GEM300 TF, DDA TF, and many more. Our Gases Standards meetings will include Filters & Purifiers TF, MFC TF, and Materials of Construction TF; while the Liquid Chemicals meetings will include Ultrapure Water (UPW) TF and High Purity Polymer Materials & Components TF among others. For the full list of technical committees and task forces meeting at SEMICON West, please visit the SEMI Standards website for details.
Please also join us on Tuesday, July 11 for the Standards Award & Networking Event from 6-7:30 PM also at the Moscone Center. We will also have a feature segment celebrating 50 years of SEMI Standards!
Register today – As a SEMI Standards Program Member, you receive access to the Expo Floors for SEMICON West, FLEX and the Design Automation Conference! Additional registration fees may be required for other sessions.
