MILPITAS, Calif. — January 20, 2026 — The SEMI Foundation today announced it has been officially approved by the U.S. Department of Labor (USDOL) as a National Apprenticeship Sponsor. This is a major milestone that strengthens industry led workforce development and expands access to high quality earn and learn pathways across the U.S. semiconductor ecosystem.

This designation aligns with the Administration’s broader America’s talent and workforce strategy, which emphasizes registered apprenticeships as a critical tool for building a resilient, competitive, and skilled workforce in strategic industries. As a national sponsor, the SEMI Foundation will work directly with employers to design, register, and scale apprenticeship programs that meet evolving industry needs while providing workers with clear, high value career pathways.

“Apprenticeships are a proven way to connect talent to opportunity while meeting real employer demand,” said Michelle Williams, Executive Director of the SEMI Foundation. “Becoming a national apprenticeship sponsor allows us to move faster, scale smarter, and support companies across the semiconductor supply chain as they build the workforce they need to compete globally.”

A Strategic Advantage for SEMI Member Companies

The SEMI Foundation is the nonprofit arm of SEMI, the industry association serving the global semiconductor and electronics design and manufacturing supply chain. As part of the Foundation’s new role, SEMI member companies will receive priority access to apprenticeship sponsorship, technical assistance, and program development support. Over time, the Foundation will expand access to additional employers across the ecosystem, ensuring alignment, quality, and consistency at scale.

Through the national sponsorship model, the SEMI Foundation will:

  • Reduce administrative and regulatory barriers for employers launching apprenticeships

  • Support standardized, industry aligned apprenticeship frameworks

  • Enable faster deployment across multiple states and regions

  • Ensure programs meet federal quality standards while remaining employer driven

Connecting Apprenticeship to a National Workforce Strategy

The SEMI Foundation’s apprenticeship sponsorship will be closely coordinated with the National Network for Microelectronics Education NNME, a national initiative funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) and operated by the Foundation to strengthen semiconductor education and workforce development through regional collaboration.

Through NNME Regional Nodes, apprenticeship programs will be aligned with local and regional employer demand, education and training providers, workforce boards, and economic development organizations. This integrated approach ensures apprenticeships are not standalone programs, but part of a connected, scalable national talent system that supports students, workers, and employers at every stage.

“Registered apprenticeships are a cornerstone of a modern workforce system,” said Mike Glavin, Director of Workforce Development at the SEMI Foundation. “By embedding apprenticeships into our national and regional strategies, we’re creating pathways that are both locally responsive and nationally aligned.”

The SEMI Foundation will host a series of informational webinars and peer to peer employer conversations in the coming months to help companies understand how to participate, design programs, and leverage apprenticeship as a long term workforce solution. BRUSSELS – November 19, 2025 – The European Chips Skills Academy (ECSA), an European Union (EU)-funded initiative coordinated by SEMI Europe, today announced the publication of the Skills Strategy Report 2025 by DECISION Etudes & Conseil. Building on the essential data presented in the 2024 edition, this year’s report provides an updated and comprehensive analysis of the growing talent shortfall in Europe’s semiconductor industry.

The report identifies a structural imbalance between workforce demand and supply, revealing a shortage of skilled professionals across the European semiconductor ecosystem due to an aging workforce and a limited inflow of new talent. Nearly 30% of the current workforce is expected to retire by 2030, while the number of graduates entering relevant fields continues to grow by less than 1% per year. This mismatch is projected to result in an annual shortfall of approximately 10,800 skilled workers across the value chain. 

“The 2025 ECSA Skills Strategy Report offers a comprehensive view of the talent landscape across Europe’s semiconductor ecosystem,” said Laith Altimime, President of SEMI Europe. “Its findings highlight the scale of the unprecedented challenge we face and the urgency to act. This report underscores the need for collaboration between industry, policymakers, and education systems to ensure that Europe develops the skilled workforce essential to sustaining its technological ambitions.”

The report’s qualitative analysis draws on insights from more than 130 experts representing industry, academia, and training organisations. It outlines emerging job profiles, highlights the most difficult positions to fill, and identifies key trends in skills demand that extend beyond traditional manufacturing. From system design and verification to cybersecurity and AI-enabled hardware architectures, the semiconductor workforce of the future is being reshaped by cross-disciplinary and hybrid skillsets. 

“The 2025 edition of the Skills Strategy Report clearly shows that Europe’s semiconductor talent challenge has entered a new phase,” said Léo Saint-Martin, Senior Consultant at DECISION Etudes & Conseil. “Addressing this requires more than short-term measures. MILPITAS, Calif. – October 14, 2025 – The SEMI Foundation today announced the official opening of the Regional Node Request for Proposals (RFP) for the National Network for Microelectronics Education (NNME), a national initiative funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) to accelerate, expand, and improve microelectronics talent development across the United States.

The RFP represents the second step in the NNME’s national rollout, following a successful Letter of Interest (LOI) period that drew nearly 300 letters from organizations across the country: a response that reflects nationwide momentum and shared commitment to building a strong and highly skilled U.S. semiconductor workforce. 

Building on that momentum, the RFP marks the next phase in identifying and supporting regional ecosystems that are ready to lead and scale workforce development efforts aligned with the growing talent needs of the industry. The SEMI Foundation serves as the NNME’s Hub Operator, and expects to support up to eight Regional Nodes, each with potential funding of up to $20 million over five years, to establish and share the gold standard for microelectronics education and workforce training across America. The RFP is now available at www.NNME.org. Proposals are due by December 22, 2025, and awards will be announced in early 2026.

  5. Contribute to shared infrastructure that provides hands-on access to industry-standard tools and facilities.
  6. Lead public outreach and awareness efforts to inspire future talent and strengthen community engagement.
  7. Coordinate and leverage existing initiatives across federal, state, local, and industry partners to ensure national alignment and impact.

Each selected Node will serve as a regional innovation hub, leading workforce efforts that align education and industry to create long-term, scalable impact.

Purdue University and VMS Solutions have announced a new collaboration to advance education and research in semiconductor manufacturing and supply chain management. The partnership aims to prepare the next generation of engineering talent to address the chronic workforce gap in the semiconductor industry.

Through this partnership, students and researchers at Purdue will gain hands-on experience using VMS Solutions' advanced simulation and planning software, MOZART Fab WISE. This industry-grade digital twin and scheduling technology models the complex dynamics of semiconductor production environments. Edwardson School of Industrial Engineering at Purdue will start to use this software in IE 490: Semiconductor Manufacturing and Supply Chain in the fall semester, with plans to expand its use into more courses. Students will engage with real-world challenges related to factory operations, capacity planning, scheduling and decision-making under constraints.

VMS Solutions brings over 25 years of industry experience supporting some of the world's leading semiconductor manufacturers. Its solutions are trusted by global fabs for optimizing production planning, enhancing throughput, and driving autonomous manufacturing initiatives. The collaboration offers Purdue students a unique opportunity to work with the same technologies used by major players in the industry.

Semiconductor company with a 50-year Arizona history funds 50 school field trips to Arizona Science Center

PHOENIX, (September 24, 2025) - Semiconductors power everything from TikTok videos to Mars rovers, but does anyone actually know how these tiny tech wonders work? ASM, a semiconductor equipment company with a nearly 50-year history in Arizona, is launching an exhibition titled "From Sand to Stars: A Semiconductor Adventure" at Arizona Science Center to pull back the curtain on this magical world.

Running September 26 through December 24, 2025, this hands-on exhibition invites students to jump into the nano-world of microchips. ASM is sponsoring field trips for 50 low-income Phoenix-area schools, giving students the chance to experiment, play, and discover the atomic layers that power today's chips and tomorrow's dreams.

The exhibition showcases how ASMers work at the atomic scale—stacking layers of atoms so thin they’re nearly invisible—to create the chips that power everything from everyday devices like our phones and laptops, to life-saving medical technologies, and even the rockets that explore the farthest reaches of our universe. Students will dive into the nano-world of microchips, discovering how tiny grains of sand are transformed into the brains behind the technology that drives our world.

The exhibition showcases the periodic table’s semiconductor superstars—from silicon, the essential element found in beach sand, to hafnium oxide, which helps make our battery-powered devices faster and more efficient. Career videos introduce the pioneers of nanoscale technology, working at dimensions thousands of times smaller than a human hair, while imagination stations encourage guests to dream up the next world-changing innovation. Interactive displays feature a nearly 8-foot-tall, to-scale photo of equipment typically kept behind lock and key in ultra-clean semiconductor fabrication plants, including ASM’s massive XP8 Synergis machine.

Arizona's semiconductor boom needs brainpower to match its manufacturing might. The state leads the nation in semiconductor investments and supplier announcements, according to the Arizona Commerce Authority, creating a tech revolution that demands skilled talent. The Semiconductor Industry Alliance projects the industry will add nearly 115,000 jobs by 2030, with an estimated 58% at risk of going unfilled. It's not just about sending people to space or powering the latest smartphone – the semiconductor industry is racing to find the next generation of innovators who will shape the future at the atomic level.

Brussels, Belgium – September 17, 2025 – SEMI Europe, in partnership with the European Chips Diversity Alliance (ECDA), the European Chips Skills Academy (ECSA), OECD, and EU STEM Coalition, has invited policymakers, educators, and industry leaders to join its forum on “Accelerating Europe’s Tech Advantage” in Brussels on October 2, 2025. This high-level gathering will focus on addressing Europe’s semiconductor talent gap and serve as a platform to exchange ideas, share best practices, and explore strategies to strengthen Europe’s skills pipeline and sustain its leadership in advanced technologies.

Through the European Commission’s Union of Skills and STEM Education Strategic Plan, STEM education remains a top priority to ensure a workforce ready for high-tech sectors including semiconductors. By 2030, the industry could face a shortage in Europe of over 75,000 skilled workers, especially hardware engineers and technicians. While STEM graduates are increasing overall, only 28% specialize in semiconductor-relevant fields, and fewer than 18,000 entered the industry in 2022, according to the ECSA Skills Strategy 2024 report.

This talent gap poses a strategic risk as semiconductors underpin AI, renewable energy, advanced manufacturing, cybersecurity, and defence. The seminar will address these challenges, highlight measurable solutions, and explore ways to secure Europe’s talent pipeline. 

“The talent shortage is one of the most unprecedented challenges facing the semiconductor industry today. To secure Europe’s long-term competitiveness, SEMI Europe, in collaboration with the OECD and the STEM coalition, will strengthen education pathways and expand the talent pipeline through key initiatives that support the industry’s future growth,” said Laith Altimime, President of SEMI Europe.

“The event underscores the necessity of coordinated action to strengthen engineering and technical education, ensure alignment with semiconductor industry needs, and secure the skills pipeline that will sustain Europe’s technological leadership in the years ahead,” said Christopher Frieling, Director, Advocacy and Public Policy, SEMI Europe.

The forum will feature keynote addresses from Laith Altimime (SEMI Europe), Andreas Schleicher (OECD), and Beatrice Boots (EU STEM Coalition), followed by a panel discussion moderated by Victoria Cummings, Senior Manager EU Projects, SEMI Europe and Milva Carbonaro, Coordinator, SPACE4GEO. A networking reception will conclude the program to foster collaboration and future action.
