Strength in Numbers – Moving Our Industry Forward

SEMI initiatives are helping strengthen our supply chain.

By Paul Trio, Director, Standards, SEMI

As we welcomed the new year, SEMI kicked off with the Industry Strategy Symposium (ISS) in early January, followed by the EHS Summit a few weeks later, and SEMICON Korea in February. For Standards, our spring meetings are just around the corner including the NA meetings taking place at SEMI HQ as well as the Japan meetings hosted at the SEMI Japan office with virtual meeting capability. We hope to see you there.

SEMICON West returns in San Francisco this July with it's theme as “Stronger Together”. This year’s message is resonating very well with our various communities as it is one of the foundational elements in the work that we do. In addition to the Advanced Packaging & Heterogeneous Integration (APHI) and PFAS initiatives launched last year, SEMI recently launched the Semiconductor Manufacturing Cybersecurity Consortium (SMCC) with a focus on addressing cybersecurity risks through industry collaboration. The incidence of cyber threats is surging at an alarming rate year over year, leading to a continuous escalation of cybersecurity risks and their consequential impacts, all while implementation of solutions lag behind. With over 50 SEMI member companies participating, from device makers to equipment OEMS to solution providers, SMCC problem-solving efforts are well under way with activities focusing on: factory cybersecurity implementation, compliance readiness, supply chain cybersecurity, regulations, thread sharing, and pre-standards engineering. For our SEMI members looking to join and engage in these efforts, please reach out to SEMI staff to learn more.

Standards education is another critical area where we can help strengthen our supply chain. We are working to grow our training courses in collaboration with SEMI U. Late last year, we held a webinar providing an executive overview on electromagnetic interference (EMI) featuring SEMI E176. And recently, we provided a webinar focused on how existing SEMI Standards can be leveraged in the back-end manufacturing space. Additional courses are planned for this year including overview courses for executives and decision makers as well as deep dive technical courses. If there are Standards training topics you would like to see or help produce with us, please reach out to your local SEMI staff.

In partnership with our SEMI and Standards members, we are working to address our industry’s critical challenges and opportunities through our various initiatives. We are stronger together.
