Call to Action: FHE Standardization Development

The formation of the SEMI Standards Flexible Hybrid Electronics (FHE) North America TC Chapter was approved at the Standards Meetings held in conjunction with SEMICON West 2023. This new FHE North America TC Chapter aims to develop global standards for flexible hybrid electronics spanning design rules, manufacturing flow, test verification methods, specifications, guidelines, and practices.

Recently, four new task forces were formed at their inaugural meeting last September. These task forces are dedicated to the assembly, design, inks characterization, and reliability and testing of FHE integrated systems.

All four task forces meet bi-weekly, and two task forces have already begun document development efforts.

Driven by the FHE Design Task Force, SEMI Draft Document 7193: New Standard, Guide for Substrate and Interconnect Design of Flexible Hybrid Electronics, focuses on a design standard for printed FHE that will be a guide for designing FHE flexible and stretchable substrates. This guide will contain design rules, principles, and best practices to promote communications between designers, users, and suppliers of FHE integrated systems. Leaders Steve Gonya (Binghamton University) and Deepak Trivedi (GE Aerospace, US) urge you to join their task force and help shape the future of FHE designs. Please email Steve at [email protected] to find out how to participate.

Driven by the FHE Inks Characterization Task Force, SEMI Draft Document 7212: New Standard, Guide for Inks Characterization for Flexible Hybrid Electronics, will focus on providing guidance on established tests to develop methods that pertain to reliability and testing of incoming inks. Join Task Force Leaders Kurt Christenson (Optomec), Daniel Slep (ChemCubed), and Ahmed Busnaina (Northeastern University) on their mission to develop a guide that will reduce overhead for new developments and future designs.

Representatives from various sectors, including academia, research institutions, and industry giants, join forces to drive the development of FHE standards. Be a part of the collective effort that’ll influence the FHE industry into a new era of innovation, collaboration, and quicken the adoption of FHE technologies into diverse consumer end markets. Open to all and free to join, connect with Laura Nguyen ([email protected]) at SEMI for more information!
