Activity report and status: September 1, 2020 to Dec 3, 2020
1. Since the last publication on September 1, 2020, we made 190 changes to 173 fabs/lines. We added 13 new fabs/lines and deleted 4 fabs/lines.
2. The report is tracking active investments (combination of construction and equipment) in the report time frame of 2019 to 2021 of 506 fabs and lines from 152 companies in 22 countries.
3. The report lists a total of 1363 facilities/lines including 128 future facilities/lines with various probabilities that will start volume production in 2020 or later.
Equipment related spending (Front End):
- Fab equipment spending for 2020 increases about 16% (US$ 65B) up from 8% expected in October (3Q20) update.
- 2020 is a record year and continues to show strong investments for Foundries 27% and Memory 22%. DRAM growth is in single digits but 3D NAND growth shows upper double digits.
- Regions with largest spending in 2020 are China +38% (US$16.3B), closely followed by Korea +72% (US$16.2B), and Taiwan -6% (US$15.5B).
- 2021 is poised to be another record year for fab equipment spending with about 5% (YoY) or US$ 68.2B (was 13% YoY US$ 67.4B in October report).
- In 2021 Foundry declines slightly, Micro (with MPU) and Memory shows increases. DRAM is expected to have a strong increase of growth rate.
- Regions with largest spending in 2021 are Korea (US$20.7B), Taiwan (US$14.3B), and China (US$ 13B).
- Other product types showing strong increases in 2021 (although actual total may vary) are for Discrete/LED,, Power, and Opto (with image sensors).
Installed Capacity (Front End):
- Capacity for Memory is expected to grow about 5% in 2020 and 6% in 2021
- Total Foundry capacity (including Foundry/IDM) shows increases in upper single digits in 2020 and in 2021.
- MPU capacity also expected to increase below the 10% mark for each 2020 and in 2021
- Capacity for Opto (including image sensors) is expected to increase in 2020 and in 2021.
- 200mm capacity (excluding EPI, LED) increases about 3% in 2020 and 4% in 2021
New facilities/construction related spending (Front End):
1. Construction spending in 2020 has increased but still slowing down -21% YoY (was -30% in October update).
2. Projects from 2020 have slowed or have been pushed out and new projects start causing 2021 to increase slightly to almost US$ 13B.
3. Most spending for construction for new and ongoing projects in 2020 occurs still in Taiwan with 9 projects, Korea with 7 projects, and China with 18 projects.
4. The report shows 18 new construction projects to start in 2020.
5. The report shows 14 new construction projects to start in 2021.
