World Fab Forecast Report (2020 to 2022). Published September 1, 2021


Activity Report:

1. The report lists a total of 141 facilities/lines including 129 future facilities/lines with various probabilities that will start volume production in 2021 or later.
2. The report is tracking active investments (combination of construction and equipment) in the report time frame of 2020 to 2022 of 574 facilities and lines of about 150 companies in 22 countries.
3. Since the last publication in June 3, 2021, we made 196 changes to 184 fabs/lines. We added 19 new fabs/lines and deleted 2 fabs/lines.

 

Fab Equipment Investments:

1. Fab equipment spending continues to rally in 2021 surpassing the US$ 90 billion mark (US$ 91.4 billion), and continues to climb to US$ 98 billion in 2022.
2. Regions with largest spending in 2021 are Korea US$ 26.4 B (+75% YoY), Taiwan US$ 24.4 B (+61%), China US$ 20 B (+21%) and Japan US$ 7.1 B (+2% YoY). The Americas increases to US$ 6.7 B (+11%). Europe/Mideast shows the largest growth rate in 2021 with 103% (YoY) increasing to US$ 4.8 B.
3. Largest investment in 2021 are for: Foundry with US$ 41.5 B (+56% YoY) and Memory about US$ 36 B (+38%). Micro (with MPU) increases to US$ 6.8 B (+22%). Discrete (mainly Power) is increasing by 99% to US$ 2.3 B. Opto sector is increasing to US$ 2.2 B (about 5%).
4. Regions with largest spending in 2022: are Korea US$ 30 B (14% YoY), Taiwan US$ 26 B (+7%), China US$ 16.7 B (-16% YoY), Japan with US$ 8.8B (24% YoY), and Europe/Mideast with US$ 8.4 B (74%).


Capacity:

1. Capacity for Memory continues to grow at steady pace in upper single digits % YoY in 2021 and 2022.
2. Foundry capacity (including Foundry/IDM) also shows increases in upper single digits % for 2021 and 2022.
3. 300mm capacity (excluding EPI) increase by 10% in 2021 and 8% in 2022.
4. 200mm capacity (excluding EPI) increases about 6% in 2021 and 5% in 2022.


New Fabs/Construction:

1. Driven by new fab projects, investments into constructions projects are going through the roofs, reaching historic highs in 2021 with US$ 18 B and in 2022 with almost US$ 27 B.
2. Out of 76 total ongoing construction projects in 2021, there are 22 new fab construction projects with high probability for volume fab.
3. Out of a total of 69 ongoing construction projects in 2022, there are 16 new fab construction projects with high probability for volume fab.
