At SEMICON Southeast Asia 2024 next week at MITEC in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, discussions on collaborations amongst Southeast Asia players will take precedence in the spirit of elevating the region’s position in the global value chain.

SEMI Southeast Asia continues to implement workforce development initiatives to strengthen the region's position as a global manufacturing hub. SEMI launched the global SEMI University online learning management system in February.

For the second straight year, SEMICON China, among the world’s largest and most influential semiconductor industry events, was the first local tradeshow of its scale held in-person, reflecting China’s rising prominence in the semiconductor industry. After securing approval from the Chinese government to hold large events, SEMI staged SEMICON China 2020 and 2021 with advanced protections against COVID-19 in place. There were no reported infections at either event. Highlights from SEMICON China 2021: Large Scale: Attendance of over 92,000, including more than 66,000 visitors and 25,000 exhibitors. Expo hall totaled 84,500 square meters with about 1,100 exhibiting companies and over 4,000 booths. World-Class Thought Leaders: Strong industry support from key foundries, OSATs, equipment and materials suppliers. Keynote speeches featured world-class industry leaders and head of China’s IC industry fund and global investment consulting agency, who explored the latest global business, technology and market trends and hot domestic investment topics. Concurrent Forums: Forums included SIIP China: SEMI Innovation Investment; Smart Manufacturing; Advanced Manufacturing; Advanced Packaging; Memory; Power Compound Semiconductor; China Display Conference; the all-new Advanced Materials Forum; and China Semiconductor Technology International Conference (CSTIC). Rich Digital Content: SEMICON China’s digital platform provided a rich array of content to attendees around the world including the Grand Opening Keynote and CSTIC, which were broadcast live online. Workforce Development: SEMI China worked closely with industry and government partners to promote SEMI Workforce Development programs to help attract and retain talent for China’s semiconductor industry. SEMICON China again featured the SEMI Workforce Pavilion and SEMI Workforce CXO Talent Forum. Outstanding COVID-19 Protective Measures: SEMICON China deployed advanced testing and monitoring equipment and implemented strict COVID-19 preventative measures to ensure a safe environment for all attendees to network and conduct business. Looking Ahead With the resounding success of SEMICON China 2021, optimism is growing that more physical events will be held with travel restrictions set to ease later this year. The more than 2,500 SEMI members around the world are eager to again network and collaborate face-to-face with customers, suppliers and partners to solve challenges in the microelectronics industry and drive semiconductor innovation that continues to transform how we work and live. That very innovation made many businesses more resilient as the virus spread and enabled people worldwide to work, learn, and shop from home. As SEMI starts to stage other events in-person, we will put in place advanced protective measures against COVID-19 to ensure the safety and well-being of all attendees. As the vaccination roll-out continues worldwide and new COVID-19 strains emerge, SEMI’s flagship SEMICON events are evolving in several ways, most notably with a larger digital presence. In this new era, we offer an international platform for SEMI members and partners across the microelectronics supply chain to collaborate, discuss industry trends, solve common challenges, network, and accelerate business growth through physical, virtual, and hybrid formats. Hybrid events – on-site exhibitions and conferences featuring a digital presence – allow the face-to-face connections so important to the semiconductor industry but also improve the attendee experience by offering an online option with the following benefits: More international accessibility to content live or on-demand Robust interactivity with live-streamed events, allowing more people to participate Greater cost effectiveness to enable companies and people under tight budgets to take advantage of world-class content, including keynote presentations, panel discussions, and technical sessions. In a recent survey of advanced manufacturing businesses, Informa Markets, a multinational publishing, business intelligence, and exhibitions group, found that 93% of respondents are likely to return to in-person events between August and December 2021, signaling a widespread eagerness for the return of live events and face-to-face connections. SEMICONs Scheduled for 2021 In a normal year, each of the seven regions where SEMI operates stages a SEMICON, with the exhibitions spread throughout the year. With the world continuing to combat COVID-19, more SEMICONs have been moved to the second half of 2021 – most of them with a hybrid format so exhibitors and attendees can take advantage of the increasing popularity of online events. After last year’s disruptions to the SEMICON schedule – and with more experience in the new normal – SEMI is excited to welcome the businesses and peers who couldn’t attend the 2020 events back to the in-person and hybrid shows. Never before had we expected that SEMICON SEA 2020 would go virtual.The COVID-19 crisis abruptly halted our ability to hold our premier Southeast Asia electronics manufacturing exposition as we typically do – in the physical realm. The pandemic tested our adaptability, challenged our willingness to experiment and, perhaps above all, accelerated not only our own but the world’s digital transformation. We had to change our way of doing business and learn to connect virtually like we had never had before. SEMI continues to believe that virtual interaction is no replacement for face-to-face engagement. But, like the rest of the world, we fast-tracked our digital education and staged the virtual event 20 July to 21 August 2020 to gather supply chain players and help fulfill the tremendous potential of our great industry. For all the suffering the COVID-19 has caused, the pandemic has underscored an important truth – that we need innovation through collaboration now more than ever to help solve the world’s greatest problems. Business Matching Sessions Technical buyers from more than 15 multinational companies along with 141 pre-qualified suppliers attended more than 50 meetings across four online business matching sessions.Technical WebinarsCompany representatives from regions including Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Taiwan, the United States, the UK, Israel, China and Japan shared their expertise and industry insights at SEMICON Southeast Asia 2020 webinars. In addition, experts from leading semiconductor companies such as Micron Semiconductor Asia Operations, ViTrox Corporation Berhad and A*STAR took part in our technical exchange by sharing the latest trends in the rapidly evolving semiconductor industry. Talent Development: Inspirational University Program Talks With building the talent pipeline critical to sustaining growth of Southeast Asia semiconductor manufacturing dynamics, talent champions from Lam Research and GLOBALFOUNDRIES highlighted career opportunities and pathways for young engineers while generating recruiting leads. More than 750 students from Malaysia and Singapore engaged panelists with questions during the sessions. With new developments emerging every day on the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak, we want to make sure you’re aware of the resources that SEMI is making available to your business, and many others in the electronics manufacturing and design supply chain, to help you navigate through these tumultuous times. Our SEMI Responds webpage lists best practices for company policies, communications and working from home, based on recent calls with members led by our Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) and Information Technology Leadership (ITL) groups. The EHS section provides tips on facilities and meetings, employee policies, business travel and communications, while the ITL section lists insights on computing hardware for staff, licensing, networks, security and employee policies. SEMI greatly appreciates the invaluable member input. Our goal is to help our member companies make informed business decisions during these highly challenging and uncertain conditions, and your contributions to this effort will benefit the industry as a whole. Click here to register.The SEMI Global Advocacy team has been evaluating how government responses to the outbreak will impact the industry. In the U.S., the team sent letters to 16 state governors last week to request the classification of the semiconductor industry as an “essential business” so that operations can continue if states institute “shelter-in-place” orders. The letters note that SEMI members are “employing all measures necessary to maintain the health and safety of their employees as they maintain continuous operations critical to the industry” based on the input of participating companies.As for SEMI events, I want to reassure you that SEMI continues to make the safety of our members, exhibitors, visitors and employees our top priority. We continue to track COVID-19 developments worldwide and advisories from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). We are also working with our regional offices to engage with industry contacts for inputs, and SEMI has postponed or cancelled several of our major events including: Canceling SEMICON Korea 2020, which was scheduled for February 5-7 Postponing SEMICON China 2020 from March 18-20 to June 27-29 Postponing ISS Europe 2020 from April 1-3 to September 1-3 Postponing ASMC 2020 from May 4-7 to the week of August 23 (still finalizing) Postponing SEMICON Southeast Asia from May 12-14 to August 11-13 If plans for any other upcoming events change, SEMI will immediately notify event exhibitors, visitors and speakers. For example, our Standards team is hosting virtual meetings for task forces, and we are exploring other virtual events and ways to keep the lines of communication open. I have challenged the SEMI team to think outside the box and will keep you posted as we make new services available.In the meantime, SEMI continues preparations for later events with laser-sharp focus and determined intent to help spark the industry to reignite business growth and meet pent-up demand. The first major rescheduled event is our largest, SEMICON China in Shanghai. You have probably heard news on some of the positive signs coming out of China. You can read about some of these developments in this blog post from the SEMI China team, which has been in close contact with key exhibitors, domestic suppliers and large multi-national corporations that have confirmed that they will participate in SEMICON China based on the current outlook. We are determined to help the industry return to growth. For the first time we will feature an IC Design Pavilion at SEMICON China to help our traditional semiconductor manufacturing members form more connections across the microelectronics supply chain.In the U.S., this year is proving how quickly everything can change. While the immediate future is steeped in uncertainty, we are diligently assessing current conditions while planning for SEMICON West 2020 in San Francisco from July 20-23, though the event dates are subject to change. On May 8, a group of students gathered at SEMICON Southeast Asia for a one-of-a-kind experience. These students would be the first in the region to participate in SEMI High Tech U (HTU) – diving into the deep technology at the core of our industry. They simulated the layering process used in the wafer fabs for microelectronics and solar cell fabrication, then identified uses of integrated circuits and how the process evolves from materials (silicon) to product (patterned wafers).Nearby, another group of students jumped into lessons about gates and binary logic, the language of computers and how they communicate. They played with four basic logic gates – “AND”, “OR”, “NOT” and “XOR” – by using logic boards. Then it was high time to apply what they learned about gates and the binary systems – the inner workings of a calculator – and launch into the much-anticipated Human Calculator game. During the game, students become a 2-bit adder. First, they must convert numbers into binary and then trace the digits through a series of gates. It's only with careful communication and concentration that teams get the right outputs.HTU is the SEMI program that introduces students to science, engineering, technology, and math (STEM) through hands-on activities and experiential learning led by industry volunteers. Since 2002, HTU has reached some 8,000 students in 12 states and nine countries.Southeast Asia hosts first HTUThe ‘Human Calculators’ were one of two groups of more than 80 high-school students from four schools who came to the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) in Kuala Lumpur for a fun day of education and workshops. The sessions were led by instructors Shafiq Shahmeen and Zafryl-Zaheidy Mustofa from Inari-Amertron and Jamaludin Johar and Huichin Chew from STMicroelectronics.Kicking off the sessions, High Tech U program manager Bryson Gauff gave an oral history of HTU with the students and their teachers and prepped them for the exciting workshops.From India to the United States – Ajit Manocha’s inspiring storySEMI president and CEO Ajit Manocha, on stage for the ribbon-cutting to celebrate the Southeast Asia’s first HTU, shared the story of how he was moved to enter high technology at a young age. Growing up in New Delhi, India, Ajit developed his passion for engineering after being inspired by a close family friend. His love of bits and bytes led him to the United States, where he started his career at Bell Labs, working with semiconductors. Reflecting on his past, he told the students that if a young boy from New Delhi can become an engineer and move to the U.S. to pursue his dream, everyone in the room can do it too – whatever their passion. Much like his friend as a youth, Ajit paid it forward by encouraging the students to follow their hearts: “The future is yours and you can be whatever you want to be.” Ajit Manocha and Professor Madya were joined onstage by Kai Fai Ng, president of SEMI Southeast Asia, and Leslie Tugman, SEMI VP of Global Workforce Development and Diversity, for the ribbon-cutting at SEMI High Tech U in Southeast Asia. The power of experiential learning YBrs. Prof. Madya Dr. Wan Zuhainis Binti Saad, Director of Academic Development Management, Ministry of Education, lit up the room with her passion for education. She quickly connected with the students as she shared her story of being a microbiologist and a professor. She encouraged the students to learn together and do what they love. A strong advocate for empowering learners, Professor Madya also offered a transformational approach to teaching students in the 21st century education – a dynamic, forward-thinking mix of passion-based learning, experiential learning, and entrepreneurial innovation.She believes the more students blend STEM studies with other curriculum like the arts and humanities, the better they can work collaboratively and develop their passion in life. Professor Madya thrilled the roomful of students with her message about what the future holds for all students, especially those participating in Southeast Asia’s first-ever High Tech U.The future of electronicsWith today’s semiconductors processing data at blurring speeds, the program ended aptly with awards for quickness. The awards ceremony, sponsored by Edwards Technology Singapore, recognized the winning team for the fastest Human Calculator in each session. The Market Trends Briefing, an event favourite, offered insights into the latest trends and developments on forward-thinking topics as diverse as the machine as an integral part of human society (NXP Semiconductors Singapore) and intelligent robots (Festo Robotics). Key industry topics including semiconductor fab investments (SEMI) and drivers and applications for Fan-Out Wafer-Level Packaging (TechSearch International) also highlighted the briefing. 2018 Year to Date Statistics from the Market Trends Briefing For the first time, SEMICON Southeast Asia convened policy makers and industry leaders in a panel – the CXO Speaks session – that provided insights into how the region can strengthen its manufacturing ecosystem, capture new opportunities in IoT, and build a resilient and growing electronics industry. The panelists agreed that the Southeast Asia semiconductor market will continue to grow exponentially in the digital era, and that regional players must not only collaborate to sustain this growth momentum but build a strong talent pipeline to continue to drive IoT innovation.With connection clearly critical to the industry’s growth, the event’s Business-Matching sessions and industry VIP networking brought business leaders together to find new partners and opportunities.Themed ‘Think Smart, Make Smart,’ SEMICON Southeast Asia featured few devices smarter and more innovative than Festo’s AirJelly, a radio-controlled airborne jellyfish. The first indoor flying object with peristaltic drive mimics the movement of a real jellyfish – except in the air. The device’s eight tentacles adapt to its environment, just like its 500-million-year-old sea-roaming cousin. A lithium-ion battery, an electric motor and a bit of helium are its wings, allowing it to take flight.The ‘World of IoT,’ a show-within-a-show, highlighted enabling applications and technologies for the IoT revolution. This interactive experience was helmed by seven Malaysian technology start-ups that showcased present and near-future consumer technologies such as autonomous vehicles, smart AI devices and virtual reality applications enabled by semiconductor innovations.In an effort to attract STEM talent to the industry, SEMICON Southeast Asia for the first time staged a panel with 11 experts from the public sector and seven from the private sector to discuss strategies for encouraging young graduates to pursue engineering careers and building a talent pipeline. For their part, the SEMICON Southeast Asia university programme and the Electronics Talent Career Fair focused on helping to build the global semiconductor industry as it faces a worker shortage.At SEMICON Southeast Asia’s Technology Innovation Forum, thought leaders from across the industry answered the question: What does Smart Manufacturing mean to the electronics manufacturing supply chain? While presenters from GLOBALFOUNDRIES, Amkor, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Infineon, Lam, IBM, Omron, and OSRAM looked at Smart Manufacturing from very different positions in the supply chain, they shared common issues with data sharing and data protection, and decision-making methodologies when monitoring a huge influx of sensor data. Samivel Krishnamoorthy, Director of Digital Manufacturing Industrialization at OSRAM, closed the session with a real-world look at the work necessary to transition a cluster of production lines with different systems to Smart Manufacturing capable lines following common systems and data handling techniques. OSRAM embraces SEMI Standards for use in conventional silicon front-end manufacturing in for Osram’s LED production. Krishnamoorthy detailed an exceptional analysis process to benchmark and adapt best practices to complex, multi-stakeholder technology production environments.Those looking for a highly influential audience from every segment of the global microelectronics manufacturing supply chain found it as SEMICON Southeast Asia. Technology and business leaders from segments including semiconductors, LEDs, MEMS, printed/flexible electronics, and other adjacent industries were a powerful presence at the event.Held for the first time in Kuala Lumpur, the event remained true to its mission to connect electronics industry innovators and thought leaders from business, academia and research from both region and all over the world.
