SEMI Japan's Overview of SEMI Standards in 2022

Overview
SEMI Japan offers educational and technical training through tutorials to help individuals and organizations in the semiconductor industry gain a deeper understanding of the SEMI Standards relevant. The aim is to improve their technical competence in using these standards. The target audience includes engineers, technicians, and managers involved in designing and manufacturing semiconductor manufacturing equipment and materials. Additionally, businesspeople who need to understand SEMI Standards as part of their work knowledge can also benefit from these tutorials.
Ease of Learning
The tutorials are delivered on-demand and offer the following features:
- Flexibility: The on-demand delivery makes it possible to take the explanatory seminar at a convenient time, making it easier for busy people to find time for learning and development. The content also includes a double speed function to speed up learning.
- Accessibility: With on-demand delivery, there is no need to go to the site, which saves time and effort.
- Repeatability: With on-demand delivery, learners can watch the same content repeatedly within the subscription period to improve your learning.
Last year, three SEMI Tutorials were held and the below report summarizes their key takeaways. Notably, all videos presented in these tutorials are in Japanese.
SEMI S2 Explanatory Seminar
Conducted in August-September and October-November 2022. (Number of participants: 324)
SEMI S2 is a widely adopted guideline that provides environmental, health, and safety (EHS) performance standards for semiconductor manufacturing equipment around the world. The course content is designed to help learners gain a comprehensive understanding of the material that may be difficult to grasp solely through reading, or that they may want to explore in greater depth. Live feedback from participants:
- There were easy-to-understand explanations of the parts of SEMI S2 that I had trouble interpreting, citing relevant chapters and other information.
- Each SEMI S2 item was explained in detail by the lecturers in charge, using electrical circuits, mechanical theory, calculation formulas, and NG examples from certification audits, etc., which helped me to understand in more detail.
- The point that each person in charge explained the content including actual examples was very easy to understand and practical.
- I am a salesperson, but I was able to understand the overview.
SEMI Software Standard "SECS/GEM" Seminar
Conducted in August-September and October-November 2022. (Number of participants: 160)
The SEMI communication standard known as ’SECS/GEM’ is an essential component of the front-end process in semiconductor manudaturing. In this course, key members of the standard development team provide a systematic explanation of SECS/GEM, including its background, development, and revision history. The course places particular emphasis on the use of diagrams to aid comprehension. (For more information, click here)

- I was able to get an overview of each communication standard and the relationship between GEM/SCES.
- I only knew the stream function command system (SECS2) in the scenario, but I was able to systematically learn what the standard does, and the communication specifications related to it.
- I had been learning on my own through educational materials distributed internally on electronic media, but there were many points that were unclear, and I could not understand them. However, by attending this seminar and listening to the lecturer's voice, the unclear points were resolved and I was able to understand.
SEMI Software Standard "GEM300" Seminar
Conducted in August-September and October-November 2022. (Number of participants: 107)
This seminar provides an explanation of the communication standard that defines the specifications for the function-by-function automatic operation of 300 mm equipment, based on the practical experience of equipment and production line systems that have been implemented to date.(For more information, click here)

- It was very easy to understand as it was explained along the process flow of the equipment.
- The standards related to GEM300 were systematically summarized and it was easy to grasp the whole image.
- It was easy to learn because there were individual and overall explanations with command examples.
