A Year Like No Other

By James Amano, Senior Director, International Standards, EHS & Sustainability, SEMI

As everyone is unfortunately all too well aware, COVID-19 has sent shock waves throughout the world and the semiconductor supply chain. The entire industry has experienced major disruptions, and this includes SEMI, which has had to postpone multiple SEMICONs and other major events. A silver lining is visible, though, as physical gatherings are gradually coming back, with the industry heading to San Francisco for SEMICON West next week.

In addition, I am pleased to announce that the dedication of Standards volunteer industry experts has not flagged in 2021, as the Program has kept pace with past years, with over 150 approved ballots, over 160 new SNARFs, and 12 new Task Forces approved as of December this year. The foundation of this has been the development and implementation of infrastructure of new SEMI Virtual Meeting software, which has empowered all Program Members to participate and vote in any TC Chapter meeting remotely.

This has truly been a year like no other, but I’m thrilled that the Standards Program has continued to progress, with members proving that development of the Standards critical to the future of the semiconductor manufacturing supply chain will continue, regardless of restrictions on public gatherings. Members will be able to maintain contacts and build new connections, and most importantly, continue progress on their efforts to sustain efficient manufacturing operations across the diverse, interdependent electronics supply chain.

Among other topics, this release of Standards Watch provides updates on recent developments in equipment data acquisition, advanced backend factory integration, flexible hybrid electronics, and electromagnetic interference. Efforts such as these are all critical to the industry’s sustained success – get involved! SEMI Standards meetings are held throughout the year in all major manufacturing regions. For more information, contact your local Standards staff, or visit the SEMI Standards Web site.
