SEMI Standards: Powering the Future

By James Amano, Senior Director, International Standards & EHS, SEMI

While the last few months have been tumultuous for much of the world, development of Standards critical to the future of the semiconductor manufacturing supply chain has continued. Over 150 Standards Task Force and Committee meetings have been held since March, as the industry will need to ramp up to meet the record spending projected in 2021.

Part of this growth will be driven by power semiconductor devices, which a recent SEMI Power & Compound Fab Report forecast to rise to nearly US$7 billion in 2021. Power semiconductors, specifically silicon carbide (SiC), offer faster switching at higher power and increased efficiency. These properties make SiC attractive to:

  • renewable energy, offering higher performance for solar inverters and wind turbines;
  • transportation, by reducing the size and weight of power modules, improving range, acceleration, and speed while speeding up vehicle charging; and
  • other energy-intensive applications such as 5G, wireless, and data centers.

While SEMI’s first SiC wafer specification, M55 was developed over 15 years ago, it’s been updated over the years as substrate diameters have grown. The industry is now looking to 200 mm diameter substrates to help drive down costs and meet the burgeoning demand for SiC.

This release of Standards Watch also provides updates on recent developments in fab and equipment securityequipment data acquisitionbuilding information modeling, SMT/PCB manufacturing and other topics. Efforts such as these are all critical to the industry’s sustained success – get involved! SEMI Standards meetings are held throughout the year in all major manufacturing regions.
