The global semiconductor industry is entering a new phase of growth to keep pace with the increasing demand for artificial intelligence (AI), high-performance computing (HPC), and system-level integration. At the same time, rapid technological advancement is intensifying the need for highly skilled talent. Industry projections indicate that by 2030, the global semiconductor sector will face a shortage of more than one million professionals, making talent a critical variable shaping competitiveness and supply chain resilience.In this context, governments and industry organizations worldwide are accelerating efforts to develop talent pipelines and strengthen cross-border collaboration. For a highly globalized industry like semiconductors, the movement of talent and exchange of knowledge are no longer confined to individual markets, but are essential to the development of a resilient and interconnected global ecosystem. Increasingly, competition is extending beyond technological breakthroughs to the ability to build and sustain a global talent pipeline.Supported by a cross-border collaboration framework, SEMI and the UK Electronics Skills Foundation (UKESF) have jointly organized a program to cultivate the next generation of semiconductor talent. Through structured exchange mechanisms and close collaboration with industry, academia and public sector partners, the program connects global talent with real-world industry environments and contributes to building a more sustainable foundation for long-term workforce development.From Lab to Fab: Understanding the Path from Research to ManufacturingA core objective of the project is to bridge the gap between academic research and industrial application. Through a 14-day immersive experience combining industry engagement and hybrid learning formats, participants engage directly with experts and gain a system-level understanding of how the semiconductor industry operates—from research and development to high-volume manufacturing.The program covers key segments of the semiconductor value chain, including advanced research, wafer fabrication, IC design, packaging and testing, and system applications. This integrated learning experience enables participants to move beyond isolated technical knowledge and develop a broader understanding of how innovation is translated into scalable industrial capabilities.As one participant shared: “Experiencing the award-winning R D solutions at ITRI and the massive scale of wafer manufacturing at UMC firsthand was unforgettable. It was incredibly inspiring to see how advanced research is translated into global manufacturing capabilities—from lab to fab.”Participant feedback highlights a clear shift in understanding. Through hands-on learning and industry engagement, participants moved beyond isolated technical knowledge to develop a more comprehensive, system-level perspective of the semiconductor industry—supporting more effective collaboration across the global ecosystem.A Practice-Oriented Approach: Redefining Semiconductor Talent DevelopmentAs technology evolves and industry demands shift, traditional discipline-based education models are no longer sufficient to fully meet the needs of semiconductor manufacturing and R D environments. Increasingly, the industry is seeking talent with cross-disciplinary capabilities and hands-on experience.The project adopts a “learning by doing” approach, combining laboratory sessions, expert-led workshops, and company visits to provide participants with practical exposure to semiconductor devices, materials, process technologies, and system design. Participants also gain exposure to real-world applications such as chip security, design verification, and advanced process technologies.From an industry perspective, this approach aligns more closely with evolving workforce needs. Compared with conventional academic training, individuals with cross-disciplinary experience and international exposure are better equipped to understand the interplay between R D and manufacturing, and to integrate more effectively into real-world operational environments.UK participants, dressed in cleanroom suits, gained firsthand exposure to Taiwan’s semiconductor manufacturing environment—observing wafer fabrication equipment up close and engaging in hands-on learning to experience the journey from lab to fab.From Talent Development to Ecosystem ConnectivityAt a time when the semiconductor industry is entering its next phase of growth, talent plays a central role not only in driving innovation, but also in enabling global collaboration. As supply chains become increasingly interconnected, building mechanisms for cross-border talent mobility and cooperation is critical to strengthening both resilience and innovation capacity.At the program’s closing event, “UK–Taiwan Semiconductor Industry and Talent Exchange,” Terry Tsao, Global Chief Marketing Officer and President of Taiwan, SEMI, noted:“By 2030, the semiconductor industry is expected to require more than one million additional skilled professionals. SEMICON West 2025 marked a year of many milestones. Not only was it the first SEMICON West ever to take place outside of San Francisco Bay Area, but it was also its largest exhibition in over 18 years. This year saw a 45% increase in booths, along with a 60% surge in registrations over 2024. The CEO Summit Keynote Series also returned to SEMICON West, featuring 14 unique presentations from October 7-9 at Arizona’s Phoenix Convention Center. Top leaders from both government and industry shared insights on a range of pertinent topics, from technology innovations, to emerging partnerships, sustainability and supply chain initiatives, and more. The keynote series began with opening remarks from SEMI’s President and CEO, Ajit Manocha, who urged audience members to focus on strategies that drive the industry forward and reinforced the importance of collaboration. He also outlined SEMI’s current priorities, including mitigating talent shortages, environmental disruptions, and geopolitical volatility.For those who missed the CEO Summit Keynote Series, this blog offers a summary of each presentation. The State of Arizona“In Arizona, vision becomes opportunity, and opportunity becomes action.” – Katie HobbsSEMICON West’s keynote series kicked off with Arizona Governor, Katie Hobbs, who underscored the expansive growth of Arizona’s semiconductor industry. She highlighted TSMC’s $165 billion investment in Arizona, the largest foreign direct investment in the state’s history, as well as more than 60 other semiconductor expansions that have taken place in the state. There are several reasons, Hobbs said, why Arizona has become an attractive place for semiconductor companies. The local talent base is one, with Arizona ranking among the top five states in the country in this area. Hobbs also highlighted Phoenix’s reliable energy grid, pro-business climate, and 100-year plan for water.AI in Every Layer: Future-Ready Strategies for Technology and Talent“This much disruptive innovation can’t be done by any one company. It requires a broad collaboration ecosystem.” – Sesha Varadarajan Following Hobbs, Sesha Varadarajan from Lam Research discussed AI-related challenges and budding solutions that address them. With AI setting the pace of industry innovation, Varadarajan emphasized the need for clarity for device-specific roadmaps. For example, logic is transitioning from FinFET to Gate-All-Around, DRAM is moving toward 3D architectures, and advanced packaging innovations are enabling continued scaling. Ultimately, Varadarajan concluded that device roadmaps would come down to three things: thinner materials, taller structures, and smaller features. Lastly, he noted that workforce development training often lags behind industry demand, highlighting Lam Research’s Semiverse education platform as a solution. Stronger Together - Building a Resilient Future for Semiconductors“When you’re working at an atomic level of precision, every detail matters.” – Jon KempDupont’s Jon Kemp offered insight into how the semiconductor industry can usher in a new wave of transformation. To achieve this, he highlighted three strategic priorities: supply chain, sustainability, and AI. Kemp emphasized bringing manufacturing closer to customers, designing products for energy efficiency, and creating new AI architectures that address mounting performance expectations. He also announced that Qnity, an integrated material solutions provider, will be spinning out of DuPont on November 1, 2025. Where Vision Meets Execution: Global Executive Summit (GES) Unites Industry Leaders“[There has been] lots of progress so far, and we want to build on that momentum.” – Carolin Seward. Carolin Seward from Google took the stage to discuss the upcoming Global Executive Summit (GES) from December 15-16 in Tokyo. This invitation-only meeting will convene industry executives to discuss core sustainability issues, like advancing abatement, pursuing gas substitution, driving green materials, and enabling low-carbon energy. Closer to Home: Costa Rica as a Partner for Successful Operations in the Western Hemisphere“Costa Rica is ready to become part of the solution.” – Manuel Tovar RiveraManuel Tovar Rivera discussed Costa Rica’s efforts to bolster its semiconductor industry. With its close proximity to the U.S., three decades of advanced manufacturing experience, and free trade, Rivera also explained the benefits of U.S. and Costa Rica collaborations. To meet the needs of its trade partners, Costa Rica is developing its local talent base, attracting foreign professionals, offering incentives for R D and startup investment, and streamlining its regulatory processes. Advancing 3DIC Technologies to Propel AI Innovations“Our best day is still ahead of us.” – Jun HeClosing out the Tuesday keynote series was TSMC’s Jun He, who spoke about the packaging innovations that are pushing the world closer to more advanced AI. The key benefit of advanced packaging, he said, is to enhance AI performance and efficiency–but excellent yield is a nonnegotiable requirement. He underscored the growing importance of CoWoS, or Chip-on-Wafer-on-Substrate packaging structures, as well as fluxless thermocompression bonding, to help meet demand for AI. AI Supercomputing for Next Generation Semiconductor Design and Manufacturing“AI factories transform electricity into intelligence.” – Timothy CostaNIVIDA’s Timothy Costa began the Wednesday keynote series by highlighting physical AI as “the next trillion-dollar industry,” and outlined how the company is helping the industry get closer to that benchmark. Costa noted the three NVIDIA computers being used to train physical AI models – Omniverse for simulation, DGX for training, and Jetson AGX for deployment. All of these, he said, need to work together to deliver on physical AI promises, like robotics, autonomous vehicles, and others. Executive Panel – Powering the Next Decade: AI’s Impact on Semiconductor Infrastructure and Market“We’re living in the most exciting time in the world of computing.” – Mukesh KhareFollowing Costa, the CEO Summit Keynote stage transitioned into a panel discussion with industry-leading AI experts – including Laura Matz from Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, Mukesh Khare from IBM Research, Mark Dougherty from TEL, and Angada Sachid from ASM. The panel was moderated by David Anderson, President of NY CREATES. Although there was much said during this 50-minute panel, a few key points were emphasized. First, Khare highlighted open chip design activities for AI models as a way to alleviate cost burdens. Design costs for more advanced nodes, he said, can be greater than $500 million. Matz also outlined the urgent need to develop PFAS-free materials without sacrificing yield. Currently, there are several areas where the industry doesn’t have a solution for PFAS, but AI models may be able to help.Sachid also mentioned power challenges, pointing to how one or two misplaced atoms can be the difference between a power-efficient versus a power-hungry chip. Deposition needs to be perfect at 10 trillion separate locations, and he pointed to AI as an emerging solution for this as well. However, despite the promises of AI, the panelists underscored that people are still a company’s most valuable asset. Revolutionizing Semiconductor Collaboration: The Emergence of AI-Driven Industry Platforms“You can make better decisions with more information.” – John KibarianWhile nearly every session touched on the need for industry-wide collaboration, John Kibarian from PDF Solutions focused on making this feasible. In today’s highly complex semiconductor supply chain, every point is critical, from fabless companies, to foundries, OSATs, and external vendors. To make industry-wide collaboration practical without compromising IP, he noted the importance of secure infrastructure, automated orchestration, and robust AI agents to assess and analyze the raw data that often goes unused. Kibarian highlighted PDF Solutions’ secureWISE system as a tool that’s already in place to address these needs. Shaping the Future of Semiconductors in the U.S.“The specific things that drove growth were the evolution of new applications.” – Giel RuttenAs the semiconductor industry continues its journey to $1 trillion in annual industry revenue, Amkor’s Giel Rutten provided an update on the U.S. market. Because OSATs are heavily concentrated in Asia, this poses a significant challenge for reshoring U.S. manufacturing. Most OEMs, he said, are looking to OSATs to handle several of their processes because it’s cheaper than doing it themselves. Rutten detailed the mounting complexities of backend assembly, including rising demand for multiple, high-bandwidth memory stacks that traditional SoCs can’t accommodate. This is pushing the industry toward heterogeneous integration, which further complicates the supply chain. Rutten concluded by emphasizing the importance of industry-wide collaboration, and noted that Amkor’s Arizona fab will offer a complete, turnkey supply chain in the U.S. Fireside Chat – Harnessing Digital Transformation to Empower People and Accelerate Precision“The more we double down on technology, the more we should also elevate humanity and double down on our values.” – Khadija Ben HammadaWith a strong emphasis on AI during the 2025 keynote series, the final discussion on Wednesday brought humans back into the spotlight. Khadija Ben Hammada from Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany and Daniel Drellich from EMD Electronics (the electronics business of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany), joined Jon Krohn on stage for an insightful talk on empowering employees in today’s AI era. Of the many things discussed, both Hammada and Drellich underscored the need to build trust with employees, as many of them fear being left behind by the technology. While it’s true that companies have invested heavily in AI, such investments also require them to educate teams on how to use it. This can best be achieved through a culture, they said, where people feel comfortable enough to learn in the first place. The panelists also highlighted the importance of finding the right AI tools for specific purposes, instead of blindly choosing the most sophisticated solution. Partnering to Serve the Demands of the AI Era“A foundry business is a trust business.” – Kevin O’BuckleyAlthough there’s no shortage of discussion about the industry’s road to $1 trillion, Intel’s Kevin O’Buckley shared where that trillion-dollar value is being realized. Based on recent projections, the simple breakdown he presented shows that 50% is generated by fabless companies, 25% by suppliers, and 25% by foundries and OSATs. With the rise of fabless companies, he highlighted the need for foundries to provide value to customers, including better power delivery solutions and predictable execution on customer projects. He also shared Intel’s efforts, like bringing its 18A node into production, its PowerVia for backside power delivery, and new slurry formulations for delicate wafers. Bridging the Talent Gap: Accelerating Workforce Solutions for Semiconductors“We're building opportunity and innovation into the semiconductor workforce.” – Shari LissShari Liss, VP of Global Workforce Development and Initiatives at SEMI, detailed the current state of the industry’s workforce needs. More than 170,000 new workers, she said, will be needed in the U.S. in the next five years. To help close the talent gap, Liss shared a roadmap of the SEMI Foundation’s efforts, ranging from awareness programs that target children as young as seven, to apprenticeship programs for adults. So far, the SEMI Foundation has reached 1.25 million students through its apprenticeship and certification programs, 3,300 people through its expanded childcare access, and 7,000 people through its SEMI U courses. Liss also highlighted the SEMI Foundation’s operator role in the newly established National Network of Microelectronics Education (NNME) — a national program that aims to build regional centers around the U.S. for microelectronics education and training. Requests for proposals are now open, and applications are due in December. American Chip Revival and the Trusted Tech Imperative“Trust is the most important word in any language.” – Keith KrachThe 2025 keynotes series concluded with Purdue University’s Keith Krach and former undersecretary of state. During his time as undersecretary, he emphasized the importance of building trust to rebuild the U.S. semiconductor supply chain. Through his trust-first approach, Krach helped secure TSMC’s presence in Arizona, leading to better jobs and a stronger domestic chip ecosystem. In addition, he was instrumental in creating a clean 5G network that later became the xGTT, or the Global Trusted Tech Standard. ECSA also builds on the student ambassador initiative, empowering institutions to support students in developing ideas and connecting them with mentors who can help shape their careers.Driving Diversity with the European Chips Diversity AllianceDiversity, equity, and inclusion are key to strengthening the semiconductor workforce. Kartikey Srivastava highlighted the European Chips Diversity Alliance (ECDA), a collaborative effort between academia and industry that aims to lower barriers to participation for underrepresented groups.With 11 partner organizations, the ECDA seeks to enhance inclusivity in the microelectronics sector, ensuring that the industry remains competitive and accessible to all. Industry growth has consequences.Rapid growth for semiconductor companies has meant increasing amounts of spent materials and chemicals. As expected, these have enlarged environmental impacts, disposal costs, and liability. Semiconductor companies confront challenges that not every sector faces: larger company size, higher value added per unit of production, and higher technological capacity are not always related to lower quantities of waste per unit of production.Collective action is needed to turn this challenge into business resilience. SEMI, imec, and our SEMI Circularity Working Group community are sharpening our cooperation to meet the need.MOVING FROM LINEAR TO CIRCULARSemiconductor value chain companies are making strides to pivot from a linear economy (take, make, waste) to a circular economy (maintain, reuse, refurbish, remanufacture, recycle). Early strategies were anchored primarily to waste management, waste-to-energy, waste diversion, and recycling programs. Lately companies are expanding to novel raw materials strategies, waste repurposing methods, and improvement of remanufacturing through resale at new-product-like performance and quality. This is a real opportunity for companies because using spent chemicals as a feedstock can cut costs, bolster supply chain management, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, create opportunities for brands, and bolster social license to operate. Yet most breakthroughs in circular practices are happening in relative isolation across the value chain. Until now, there is no widely recognized system for identifying and ranking materials used in manufacturing to prioritize where conversion from linear to circular use would provide the most gains. A FRAMEWORK FOR PRIORITIZATIONA 2025 report – produced through collaboration between SEMI and imec – presents an inventory of 69 distinct materials prioritized for circularity along with the framework for ranking. It also shares the method to support calibration to fit specific use cases. The outputs will be immediately useful for decision-makers across functions in the semiconductor value chain, including, but not limited to:ProcurementSustainabilityEHS (environment, health, and safety), andRisk management. But this isn’t just a national effort. We’re closely aligned with ecosystem-building in Dresden, Prague, and across Central Europe. Collaboration across borders is essential.Sygitowicz: We believe strongly in the philosophy of “building bridges.” In our work with Taiwan and other partners, we focus on five “bridges”: knowledge, people, business, development, and shared success. These connections are critical for Poland to become an integral part of the global semiconductor supply chain. Poland is not trying to replicate what others have done, but to learn from it—particularly in ecosystem development. The long game is not just investment attraction; it’s ecosystem maturity. SEMI: Talent shortages remain a major concern across the industry. What steps are being taken to prepare the future-ready workforce?Morali-Majkut: We are working closely with academia to build the talent pipeline Poland will need as its semiconductor sector grows. Together with industry partners, we’re developing vocational training programs and university-level collaborations aimed at aligning skills with industry needs. There are already several R D-focused projects underway at Polish technical universities, and Poland’s strong foundation in technical education positions us well to support workforce growth as the industry scales up.The semiconductor industry has one of the most complex supply chains in the world. Investing in this industry creates ripple effects across a wide range of skill areas. When we invest in semiconductor education, the spillover benefits for the broader economy will be immense.Altimime: While the talent shortage is certainly a challenge, it also presents a massive opportunity. At SEMI, we’re committed to making Europe’s semiconductor investment a long-term success. Through strong collaboration with the European Commission and a broad network of consortium partners across Europe, including Poland and other Eastern European countries, we’re pushing forward both public and private sector engagement to ensure the continuity of growth and innovation.Europe is projected to face a shortage of 271,000 skilled workers in the semiconductor sector by 2030 if current trends persist. SEMI: How can Europe strengthen its semiconductor supply chain resilience in the face of geopolitical challenges?Ernst: Resilience starts with recognizing and building on Europe’s existing strengths. While much attention is often given to gaps, Europe already has world-class players, technologies, and a strong consumer market. These are key strategic assets. What’s needed now is coordination—government and industry must work together to align efforts, avoid fragmentation, and ensure that political initiatives channel support in a unified direction.Van de Ven: For industry, true resilience means the freedom to operate globally. Trade controls and IP restrictions can create bottlenecks, so policies must support open access to markets across regions—including the U.S., Europe, and Asia. Companies also need to co-create with fabs and universities, embedding themselves where talent is trained and where innovation happens. This creates a robust, future-ready ecosystem. Location decisions are increasingly influenced by proximity to both production facilities and research institutions.Sygitowicz: Poland is well-positioned to support investment through a combination of ready-to-develop land, financial incentives (such as grants and tax exemptions), and ecosystem services. Beyond infrastructure, there is growing government support for talent development and innovation. Startups, accelerators, and academic partnerships are playing a larger role in building the technology pipeline—creating a more comprehensive, innovation-friendly environment for foreign investors.Vuorikari-Antikainen: Speed is an often overlooked but critical factor in competitiveness. Europe has historically moved slowly, but if countries like Poland can create fast-track pathways for permitting, investment, and project execution, they can set themselves apart. Pairing this agility with strong education and startup ecosystems will help deliver long-term resilience and responsiveness to market needs.Altimime: We must avoid country-centric thinking. Europe’s strength lies in its diversity with different regions excel in different areas, and the challenge is to bring those strengths together. Initiatives like the pilot lines are a great example of this in action, connecting capabilities in photonics, advanced packaging, and quantum technologies across the continent. With strong leadership from Europe’s research and technology organizations (RTOs), such as the Technical Research Centre of Finland (VTT), we’re seeing renewed momentum in areas where Europe has historically been strong, like communications and photonics.To truly accelerate Europe’s position in the global semiconductor landscape, we need to focus on integration—connecting the dots between regions, institutions, and industries. Ultimately, the private sector will determine how to build and scale the necessary infrastructure and innovation.Pudlowski: It’s true that Poland did not benefit from the first Chips Act to the extent that its assets and potential might suggest. We offer a combination of engineering talent, geographic advantage, and industrial readiness—yet, in terms of EU-level influence and visibility, we’ve been underrepresented. That is beginning to change.Poland now has a national semiconductor strategy backed by the government, and this, combined with growing engagement from organizations like SEMI, positions us for stronger inclusion going forward. At the same time, we need more bottom-up visibility. Companies in Poland should proactively present their capabilities and publish their work more widely. We have a great deal to offer, and now is the time to ensure that’s recognized in Brussels and across Europe.Altimime: Poland’s recent release of its national chip strategy is both timely and critical. From SEMI’s perspective, this is a proven model: a clear strategic roadmap, strong government backing, and industry alignment create the right environment for success. The first Chips Act delivered real progress and global attention, and with Poland’s new strategy in place, we expect to see even greater integration into the European semiconductor value chain in the next phase of the initiative.Morali-Majkut: During recent conversations with international partners, particularly in Asia, it became clear that while countries like Germany and the Czech Republic are well known within the semiconductor ecosystem, Poland has not always been equally visible—despite being geographically and industrially well-positioned. That perception is starting to shift.Poland has long played a vital role in Europe’s industrial supply chain, particularly in collaboration with Germany. We bring a strong foundation in engineering, education, cost-efficiency, and industrial land availability. These assets are highly relevant to semiconductor expansion. New pilot lines offer European innovators access to the most advanced semiconductor technologies for product development and validation.The global semiconductor landscape has undergone significant transformation in recent years. With disruptions such as the semiconductor supply chain crisis and the challenges it posed to the automotive sector, Europe’s dependence on external fabrication facilities, particularly in Taiwan, has become a pressing concern. In response, the European Union (EU) introduced the EU Chips Act, a comprehensive framework designed to reduce this reliance and boost Europe’s share of the global semiconductor market. ITF Chip into the Future, hosted by imec at SEMICON Europa 2024, was a pivotal event that brought together industry leaders, policymakers, and experts to explore the implementation of the EU Chips Act and the future of Europe’s semiconductor ecosystem. Jari Kinaret, Executive Director of the Chips Joint Undertaking (Chips JU)—the body overseeing the EU’s semiconductor investments—explained, “The Chips JU is about capacity building to drive semiconductor innovation in Europe. We will continue to be dependent on the rest of the world, but we want to make sure that the rest of the world depends on us as well.” Jari Kinaret, Executive Director, Chips JUEuropean research is driving progress towards sub-nanometer fabricationOne of the pilot lines, located at imec’s research center in Belgium, is focused on advancing methods that push Moore’s Law forward by achieving smaller and more efficient circuit features. As Luc Van den hove, President and CEO of imec, explained, “imec is now powering innovation for tomorrow’s chip designs, including stacked layers of chips, with each layer containing specific functionality implemented on chip processes optimized for each function. CEA-Leti CEO, Sébastien Dauvé, explained that the goal of the FAMES pilot line is to advance “not only FD-SOI at 10nm and 7nm nodes, but also novel non-volatile memory technologies, RF components, 3D integration, and the development of small inductors for DC-DC converters.” Sébastien Dauvé, CEO, CEA-LetiAdvancements in 3D integration and chiplet technologies are closely tied to innovation in chip packaging. Christoph Kutter, Executive Director of Fraunhofer EMS, described how the Advanced Packaging and Heterogeneous Integration for Electronic Components and Systems (APECS) pilot line in Germany is designed to meet the needs of industrial customers’ growing demand for advanced packaging solutions. Kutter noted “Customers told us that they needed to integrate logic and power, sensors and logic, and other combinations of functions. Emmanuel Sabonnadière, EVP at Soitec, highlighted how fabrication of advanced silicon carbide (SiC) power devices “is enabled by SmartSiC™ technology from Soitec – part of a built-in-Europe solution for silicon carbide.” Sabonnadière explained that SmartSiC technology “creates very thin layers of SiC material which make really differentiated substrates supporting the production of high-performance SiC devices.” Emmanuel Sabonnadière, EVP, SoitecInnovation in materials emerged as an important theme at ITF Chip into the Future. She remarked, “The word ‘semiconductor’ itself isn't very exciting—it’s even off-putting to some. By simply changing the name of educational programs, we’ve seen significant increases in enrollment. This demonstrates the power of language in shaping perceptions and interest.”Thomas Heurung of Siemens EDA also called for a stronger emphasis on entrepreneurship, noting “there is a big contrast between Europe and the US, particularly Silicon Valley.” He explained how his company’s Cre8Ventures unit had been set up to help start-ups through the key stages of creating a successful new company, including product development, attracting funding, and bringing the product to market. Thomas Fleischmann, Program Manager at Robert Bosch, explained how the EU Chips Act has accelerated the formation of the European Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (ESMC) joint venture, in which Bosch is a key stakeholder. ESMC is building a new semiconductor fabrication plant in Dresden, dedicated to producing chips for the automotive and industrial sectors. Leaders in the semiconductor industry are finding ways to balance rapid demand growth with strategies to mitigate the risks of geopolitical uncertainty and a complex supply chain.At the CxO Summit during SEMICON Europa, industry leaders gathered to share insights into the immense opportunities ahead for the semiconductor sector, as well as the challenges that could impede growth. Laith Altimime, President of SEMI Europe, highlighted how discussions last year centered on reaching $1 trillion in global sales by 2030. “The conversation today is about how far above $1 trillion we will be in 2030,” said Altimime. “Artificial intelligence is an amazing and exciting technology, and the semiconductor industry is at the heart of it.”Laith Altimime, President, SEMI EuropeAjit Manocha, President and CEO of SEMI, described the current state of the semiconductor industry with one word – “unprecedented.” Emphasizing quantum computing as the next growth driver after AI, Manocha urged leaders to prepare for the next landmark - $4 trillion in global sales by 2040. However, the challenges facing the industry are equally unprecedented. Manocha identified four key obstacles: geopolitical volatility, the Net Zero challenge, the competition for top talent, and supply chain disruptions. “We need to work together to solve these challenges – we need unprecedented collaboration,” he explained. Ajit Manocha, President and CEO, SEMIA European Perspective on the Industry’s ChallengesWith the CHIPS Act in the US and the European Union (EU) Chips Act, the industry is also seeing unprecedented governmental engagement. Gustav Kolbe, Acting Director of Enabling and Emerging Technologies at Directorate-General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology of the European Commission, explained that Europe had been deeply impacted by the effect of trade tensions and supply chain disruptions. “In the field of semiconductors, we realized that we cannot keep doing business as usual and expect to achieve more resilience and reduced dependence on non-European supply chains,” Kolbe said. Gustav Kolbe, Acting Director of Enabling and Emerging Technologies, DG CONNECT, European CommissionJari Kinaret, Executive Director of the Chips Joint Undertaking (Chips JU), which is responsible for implementing EU Chips Act programs, described how its projects amplify the effect of EU funding by leveraging matching contributions from member states and participating companies. “This means that our budget of €4 billion actually produces investments in the semiconductor industry of about €11 billion,” he noted. Barbara Frenkel, Member of the Executive Board Purchase at Porsche, shared that the company is collaborating with the industry to improve its access to the chips needed for automotive electrification. This includes joining industry groups such as the SEMI Global Automotive Advisory Council (GAAC) and, as she said, “learning your language.” Frenkel added, “Porsche aims to emulate Apple’s approach with Intel and Motorola to drive innovation – we will do the same with suppliers of automotive chips.”Barbara Frenkel, Member of the Executive Board Purchase, PorscheAnother solution to supply constraints is to widen the supply pipeline. John Behnke, General Manager for Smart Manufacturing at Inficon, described how smart technology can significantly improve efficiency and output. “A semiconductor fab is 100 times more complicated than anything else in the world – it is a mathematical nightmare to model it. That gives massive opportunities for improved productivity if we can implement smart control technologies,” Behnke explained. As the industry doubles in size in the 2020s, it cannot afford to double its use of resources, such as energy or greenhouse gas emissions. Frédéric Godemel, Executive Vice President for Power Systems and Services at Schneider Electric, shared that the biggest impact on sustainability could come from “energy frugality” – using energy more efficiently. He explained that implementing data fusion in a semiconductor fab – combining detailed analysis of the operation of chillers with external data sets, such as weather conditions to allow for more efficient use – results in energy savings of 10%. “This approach saved costs, reduced CO2 emissions, and provided a financial payback in less than one year,” Godemel said.Frédéric Godemel, Executive Vice President for Power Systems and Services, Schneider ElectricThe value of smart control in fab operations was also highlighted by Katharina Westrich, Global Vice President of Electronics, Semiconductors Simulation Digital Industries at Siemens.
