World Economic Forum

The state of manufacturing is changing rapidly. Regardless of sector or location, manufacturing decision-makers across the world are signaling a desire for better supply chain resiliency, manufacturing flexibility, increased speed of innovation and stronger environmental sustainability. Singapore’s manufacturing sector, a significant contributor to its gross domestic product, is always evolving and today is shifting away from its traditional focus on producing highly customized products using flexible manufacturing processes, but at significantly lower efficiencies. Today, with Industry 4.0, we can design manufacturing systems that optimize both efficiency and flexibility. And this is possible because of the convergence of technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), data analytics, robotics and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). This blend of technologies helps reduce the cost of technological solution ownership – a derivative of Right’s Law – as a function of cumulative production. In HP Singapore, driving innovation in our product and processes is part of our DNA, and over time our products have grown in complexity and breadth. We have embraced Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) technologies in our advanced manufacturing lines. We started our Industry 4.0 journey in 2016 with Vision and Mission 2020 to modernize our production facilities to smart factories that strengthen our competitive edge. Our focus was on upskilling our employees with future skill sets, build new technological capabilities and partner with higher education institutes. To drive these transformations, we have formulated five pillars: Additive Manufacturing Data Analytics Cyber-Physical Integration Digitalization Workforce Transformation These five pillars have enabled us to move from labor-intensive and reactive processes to processes that are highly digitized, automated, and AI-driven, enabling us not only to increase quality and productivity but also to reskill our people in anticipation of jobs they will need in the future. Technicians have been upskilled and promoted to techno-operators which has, in turn, freed up technical specialists to explore other roles. Engineers have retrained as data scientists, or have moved to new product development, for instance. In 2017, HP’s Ink Supplies Operations (ISO) set up Smart Manufacturing Applications and Research Centre (SMARC) to adopt 4IR technologies and implement these innovations in production lines. Today, SMARC is the home ground for HP engineers to experience, trial and prototype solutions, bringing innovative and sometimes unexpected solutions to manufacturing. It is also a showcase for industry partners, government agencies and schools. Here is how each pillar of the SMARC contributed to transformation to augment the manufacturing workforce: Cyber-Physical Integration – Move Role of robotics/automation – By standardizing automation standards for robotics, we have deployed collaborative robots (Cobots) and autonomous intelligent vehicles (AIVs) to perform manual and routine tasks to drive productivity, while reducing errors from operator fatigue and protecting our operators’ physical well-being. Digitalization – Sense Role of IIoT – Devices are a treasure trove of data that can provide clarity on how the entire manufacturing line is performing in real time. Building a platform that connects devices and collects data while allowing factory floor managers to dynamically visualize on an Integrated Command Centre (ICC) and manage factory performance is central to HP’s digital transformation journey. And IIoT is not restricted to just devices that are already wired for data sharing. HP has also connected off-the-shelf analogue devices using a standardized data transportation protocol, allowing HP to collect essential data across all types of devices and eliminating manual data entry. Additive Manufacturing – Build By embracing additive manufacturing (use of HP MultiJet Fusion 3D printers), HP introduced more flexibility in operations through on-site rapid prototyping, light production, and replacement of parts needed on our manufacturing floors, shortening production timelines. We 3D printed pallets, which are cheaper and faster to produce, and replaced original pallets for transportation on conveyor belts, improving the efficiency and productivity of our operators. (Photo Credit: HP) The HP Multi Jet Fusion 3D printing technology has helped HP to replace traditional manufacturing methods and streamline processes in our supply chain. For example, HP is 3D printing the Drill Extraction Shoe, a tool that is essential to the removal of waste products from laser-drilling in HP’s printhead manufacturing line. Through 3D printing, HP has consolidated the production of the tool from nine parts to one 3D printed model, thereby optimizing the design of the tool and reducing its production time from three to five days to 24 hours. Data Analytics – Think By deploying advanced analytics and machine learning models, HP has enabled real-time detection, diagnostics, and prediction of product quality across our manufacturing lines. Predictive models are replacing traditional “destructive testing,” reducing waste and allowing HP to meet unique product specifications more accurately. Machine learning is diagnosing and recommending the right set up for tools and manufacturing lines, when necessary, to reduce downtime and increase precision. Workforce Transformation – Grow The pivot to becoming an advanced manufacturing leader not only requires HP to invest in 4IR technologies but also skill sets to operate 4IR technologies. We embarked on a Workforce Transformation program to help our employees stay competitive in a fast-changing world. Today 35% of HP technical workforce have had the opportunity to take on new roles even as needs evolve, thanks to internal and external training and reskilling. Beyond technology and training, the glue that binds these together and makes it successful is our culture at HP. We are ambition-led, which means that we do not see the world as it is, but what we can be. And we do so by collaboration. Plans for the Future After accomplishing our Mission 2020, in late 2020 we launched Mission 2025 to extend our end-to-end smart factory capabilities through advanced connectivity, intelligence and automation to optimize and drive sustainable manufacturing flexibility and efficiency. Pyramid of HP’s smart manufacturing focus Advanced technologies such as additive manufacturing, IIoT, automation and robotics, data analytics, machine learning and AI are central to the connectivity and the end-to-end intelligence of our smart factories, enhancing production efficiency and flexibility while improving the quality of our products. For example, the deployment of IIoT sensors in our wafer plant has helped to reduce downtime in replacing CO2 gas cylinders. What’s more, AI enables us to more accurately monitor the dispensing of structural adhesive to eliminate lost yield. We believe that by enhancing manufacturing efficiency and flexibility, we were able to shorten resolution time, reduce our carbon footprint, and improve the resiliency of our manufacturing and supply chain systems. HP smart factory model In April 2021, two lines in HP Singapore joined the World Economic Forum’s Global Lighthouse Network after being recognized for pivoting from a labor-intensive factory into a digitized, automated one with the help of AI. In doing so, we managed to improve manufacturing costs by 20% and productivity by 70%. Under Mission 2020, we saw the following successes: Improved manufacturing costs by 20% Improved productivity by 70% Brought most HP employees onboard to our smart manufacturing journey Equipped HP employees with skill sets in areas such as additive manufacturing, data analytics, AI, robotics and Internet of Things Established a Model Factory playbook With Mission 2025, we will: Continue to train employees in future skillsets by partnering with institutes of higher learning Scale our Model Factory playbook across more manufacturing lines to reduce costs and improve productivity Enhance our knowledge in additive manufacturing by building an ecosystem as a service platform to help manufacturing companies Enable a sustainable manufacturing system to reduce our carbon footprint and help enable a circular economy We believe in innovating with purpose by focusing on solving real-world problems and creating technology in the service of humanity. That is why we built the SMARC to create the solutions for our lines and showcase these solutions to encourage industry participation. We are driven by values and ambition, which means that it is not just what we do, but also how we execute it. As the global economy is constantly transformed, the need for new skills has never been higher. The microelectronics industry is thoroughly affected by this urgent need. To develop a workforce fit for the future, it is crucial to invest not only in reskilling and upskilling, but also in skills anticipation and inclusivity. To tackle this need, the European microelectronics ecosystem has adopted many bottom-up initiatives and good practices supporting lifelong learning. Many companies collaborate with universities and training institutes to offer work-based training, and numerous events take place to support women participation in STEM and to attract more young talent to a microelectronics career. Despite these great efforts, further pooling of investments is necessary if Europe is to develop efficient lifelong learning programs. Creating strong skills partnerships is vital for sustainable upskilling and reskilling initiatives. According to the World Economic Forum (2021), greater private-public collaboration on large-scale upskilling and reskilling initiatives could boost global GDP by $6.5 trillion and lead to the creation of 5.3 million net new jobs by 2030. What is the Skills Partnership? Against this backdrop, SEMI Europe is launching the Skills Partnership for Microelectronics. The partnership brings together industrial and education partners from the microelectronics ecosystem to implement the Pact for Skills, an EU initiative which aims to boost upskilling and reskilling investments in key ecosystems for Europe’s competitiveness. Following the high-level roundtable with SEMI Europe’s Advisory Board, hosted by European Commissioners Thierry Breton and Nicolas Schmit, the microelectronics sector was selected in November 2020 as one of the key ecosystems for the first wave of implementation of the Pact, alongside automotive and aerospace/defense. Read more details about the October 2020 roundtable. 59 partners have already endorsed the Pact for Skills for Microelectronics. The Skills Partnership for Microelectronics aims to: Exchange good practices of upskilling and reskilling initiatives of the microelectronics industry Develop sustainable collaboration mechanisms that will monitor microelectronics skill needs, learning from the examples of the METIS blueprint project Promote the microelectronics sector as a career choice Boost the presence of women and other under-represented groups in the sector. The partners will have the opportunity to liaise not only with European, but also with national and regional authorities and clusters, so that a pan-European holistic approach to microelectronics skills development is achieved, and a significant flux of public and private investments on skills is mobilized. To launch this ambitious partnership, SEMI Europe held an initial workshop on March 17. Participants included representatives from the European Commission’s DG Connect, DG Employment and DG Grow, national and regional authorities, and over 70 industry and education partners. The workshop opened with representatives from the European Commission informing all stakeholders about the Pact for Skills initiative, as well as about EU skills-related funding opportunities. In the framework of the Pact for Skills, the Commission will support the ecosystems with a Networking Hub, a Knowledge Hub and a Guidance Resources Hub. These platforms will be available later in 2021 and will act as a one-stop-shop to support the partners and provide information on EU policies and funding opportunities. Other presentations went on to set the scene, presenting the main priorities of the partnership. Françoise Chombar, CEO of Melexis, highlighted the skills challenge experienced by the microelectronics industry. She emphasized the importance of lifelong learning and the danger of the gender disbalance in the sector and underlined the huge innovation potential and profitability that could be unleashed for Europe if the gender gap is successfully addressed. Moreover, the preliminary results of the METIS Microelectronics Skills Strategy were presented, to offer the basis for the partnership’s approach to skills anticipation. The partnership will establish working groups that will investigate the industry needs, leading to a better connection with the offer of education and training programs. Last but not least, the partnership aims to promote national and regional funding of upskilling and reskilling initiatives. In this regard, representatives from national and regional authorities and clusters participated in the meeting. The government of the Basque region had an active role, presenting the region’s priorities, incentives and main actions on promotion of lifelong learning initiatives. The next steps The meeting concluded with an overview of the next steps for the newly launched partnership. In the next workshop, the partners will align on the specific KPIs, as well as on the focus areas where they would like to engage (skills anticipation in semiconductor manufacturing, skills anticipation in semiconductor design, gender balance, etc.). In that framework, the executive board will be established, as well as the working groups that will lead the work of the partnership and set targeted objectives. Ng: How did the Infineon backend plant in Singapore distinguish itself to qualify for lighthouse certification? WOI: The Infineon Singapore backend manufacturing plant is proud to be a Lighthouse Certified Smart Manufacturing site as part of the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Fourth Industrial Revolution platform. Our Industry 4.0 (I4.0) implementation reduces labor costs by 30% and improves capital efficiency by 15%. We drove this successful digital transformation continuously investing in our people development and digital backbone.Of the many initiatives under our I4.0 Smart Factory platform, five were selected for WEF Lighthouse submission and certification. Digital foundation with integrated connectivity and workflow execution We implemented an Internet of Things (IoT) framework to connect machines to manufacturing system more than two years ago. The digitization of our Work-in-Progress (WIP) management systems provides full traceability and gives us better control of the four Ms (Man-Machine-Method-Material). Material handling and process automation We progressively deployed automated solutions starting six years ago using autonomous transport, robotic material management systems and automation of packing processes. This eliminated non-value touches in areas of WIP storage and retrieval. Advanced algorithms enabled WIP scheduling and dispatching As our product mix and volume grew in complexity, our advanced algorithms has enabled us to increase our machine uptime, thus reducing idle and set-up time. Manufacturing control tower Our control tower provides a real-time pulse of the entire manufacturing process, from machine efficiency to quality. The tower also improves data integrity and collaborative information sharing while issuing early-warning alerts that enable exception management and timely decisions. This principle formed the foundation for Micron’s Go and See virtual visit of its Singapore manufacturing plant on 26 August 2020 as 27 companies including GLOBALFOUNDRIES, ST Microelectronics, Infineon, TEL, ViTrox , IBM, HP and UTAC joined the first-of-a-kind virtual factory visit. The chip industry powerhouses gathered to see how Micron’s Lighthouse frontend wafer fabrication facility leverages Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies to drive new production and cost efficiencies.They saw clear markers of a transformed organisation and spoke with working-level staff, managers and front-line employees. Company representatives also met virtually with Micron management teams from organisations that led its digital transformation – from pilot programs to integration at scale – to realise significant financial and operational benefits. The world’s most advanced manufacturing factories are leading the way in driving efficiency and sustainability.In advance of its 2020 meeting, the World Economic Forum welcomed Micron into its Global Lighthouse Network, a group of advanced manufacturers “that are showing leadership in applying the technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution to drive operational and environmental impact.”For years, Micron has been helping clients integrate artificial intelligence (AI), big data analytics and the industrial internet of things (IIoT) into their factories. And now Micron’s factory is one of the first facilities in Singapore, along with Infineon, to be recognized by the Global Lighthouse Network.In a recent interview with Channel News Asia, Manish Bhatia, executive VP of Global Operations, explained how Micron has been practicing what it preaches: “Our products enable new technology trends such as IoT, 5G, cloud computing and autonomous driving. Applying these technologies in our own manufacturing facilities demonstrates the enormous potential in driving business value. Industrial IoT and artificial intelligence are part of the biggest revolution since the advent of robotic manufacturing productivity 50 years ago.”For Micron, this journey started with the need to “keep pace with the technological advancement of our semiconductor processes,” Manish said. “We wanted to provide higher-capacity, higher-performance, lower-cost and lower-power chips.”This meant embarking on the same journey they guide clients through: “We started by focusing in 2014 on simple statistical analysis to improve our production processes,” Manish said. “Following that, we developed more complex deep learning and AI capabilities to draw insights from our data. Most recently, we introduced IoT sensors — like cameras and acoustic sensors — to gather even more data that allows us to further improve our production processes.”The Singapore factory plays a critical role in developing leading-edge NAND. Micron’s Singapore presence, composed of two wafer-fabrication facilities and one assembly and test facility, serves as the base for worldwide operations. With over 500,000 square feet of cleanroom space, the location is also a designated NAND Center of Excellence, driving the implementation of the company’s leading-edge 3D NAND production for use in mobile phones, solid-state drives, digital cameras and more. Micron employs approximately 8,000 people in Singapore.The World Economic Forum says the results of the Singapore transformation have been spectacular: Micron’s “semiconductor fabrication facility has integrated big data infrastructure and IIoT to implement artificial intelligence and data science solutions, raising product quality standards and doubling the speed at which new products are ramped.”Below are notable achievements that Micron was recognized for: Automation of production and maintenance produced a 4% tool availability improvement. The IIoT-enabled smart factory led to a 22% scrap and product downgrade reduction. Advanced analytics for process optimization with OEMs reduced time to ramp new products by 50%. Deep learning optical-defect detection created a 2% yield improvement. The integrated deviation management platform reduced time to resolve quality issues by 50%. Micron was a natural choice for the Global Lighthouse Network, an organization whose creation is timely. The World Economic Forum points out that “global production industry is lagging in its adoption of Fourth Industrial Revolution manufacturing technologies, with more than 70% of companies stuck in pilot-phases … [There is] a need for a neutral learning platform to showcase top-use cases, roadmaps and organizational approaches to adopting and scaling technologies from which other companies globally could benefit.”As part of the Global Lighthouse Network, Micron will be able to share knowledge and best practices with peers, support new partnerships and help other manufacturers deploy technology, adopt sustainable practices and transform their workforces. The recent World Economic Forum event in Davos ranked the unfolding climate crisis among the top three risks companies and governments must address in order to prevent irreversible environmental damage. With the stakes that high, it is becoming critical for organizations of all sizes to take into account climate change risks and opportunities as they develop their strategic and business continuity plans.Two fundamentally different schools of thought have emerged on how to address climate change. On one side, NGOs and climate activists such as Greta Thunberg are pressuring governments to abruptly divert away from fossil fuels, a shift that experts say would exact a deep economic impact. On the other side is the camp that believes capitalism will run its course and ultimately guide public and private entities to find climate change solutions.For their part, organizations are responding to rising pressure from shareholders and stakeholders to disclose their emissions mitigation strategies. The accuracy and completeness of environmental disclosures ranges widely. Some businesses adopt a conservative approach and limit the volume of information made public, while others announce aggressive targets for reducing emissions from their operations and supply chains.Formed 18 years ago, the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) has motivated companies (and now cities) to disclose their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In 2019, more than 525 institutional investors representing $96 trillion in assets backed the CDP, whose annual CDP questionnaire is often recognized as the most “comprehensive collection of self-reported environmental data in the world.”As the list of signatory investors supporting the CDP has grown over the years, so has the number of companies responding to the annual CDP questionnaire – from 228 companies in 2003 to over 8,400 in 2019. Company scores are based on 14 disclosure areas such as C-suite level sign-off on the questionnaire content, producing GHG emission data verified by a third party, or publicizing their completed questionnaire on the CDP website. Among all respondents, 179 companies (2%) scored the highest in leadership by demonstrating the strongest commitments to reducing greenhouse gases emissions from their operations and supply chain.Among these 179 companies – referred to as the A-list companies – 10 are SEMI members headquartered in Japan, Taiwan, Korea and France. Augmented reality (AR) tyrannosauruses towered on-screen as I interacted with the creatures in a mix of prehistoric and cutting edge. Or, rather, my AR double was doing the playacting. Minutes later, virtual doppelgangers of a small lineup of chip industry executives cut the ceremonial ribbon. Seemingly sweeping away the winter chill, the opening of SEMICON Japan 2019 dazzled with smart technology and the promise of lives, cities and workplaces transformed, with uber-intelligent applications in full display at Tokyo Big Sight. But what resources does the industry need to harness to drive the next era of innovation? The semiconductor industry’s unwavering passion and young talent are key, said Hiroshi Imano, Chairperson of the SEMICON Japan Initiatives Committee, in his opening keynote. And hardly any region of the world is in a better position to help realize that future than Japan, Imano said. The region supplies one third of the equipment and more than half of all materials to the global semiconductor manufacturing industry.Talent was also top of mind for SEMICON Japan 2019 keynote speaker Makiko Eda, Japan's Chief Representative Officer at the World Economic Forum (WEF). Serving as a platform for public-private partnerships, the organization's mandate is to tackle global issues such as climate change and geopolitical strife in making world more resilient to risk and, by extension, more sustainable.Spanning ecology, economy, technology, society, geopolitics and industry, that mission includes reskilling and upskilling a billion people over the next decade, a high priority for WEF, which hosts a conference every January in Davos, Switzerland. The theme of this month's conference – Stakeholders for a Cohesive and Sustainable World – reflects the vital importance of building the international partnerships and global consensus necessary to achieving WEF's goals.One key to that sustainability will be technology and Arm, a global chip design company, will play a key role, with the company’s chips touching over 70 percent of the world’s population, Arm president Yuzuru Utsumi said in his keynote. Today, Arm is driving toward an ambitious goal: Ship 100 billion chips from 2017 to 2021 – the same number produced over the previous quarter century – by powering advances in mobile computing, server and networking infrastructures, and automotive applications.Arm’s innovation ecosystem of more than 1,000 partners will deliver these chips as they continue to work together to develop differentiated technology. Arm plans to increase investments not only in its primary processor business to accelerate market share gains but in the company’s new IoT business to create new revenue streams. The goal: Deliver long-term sustainable growth, Utsumi said. SEMICON Japan 2019 showcases SMART manufacturing and transportation Billed as a showcase of smart technologies, SEMICON Japan 2019 delivered with an array of eye-grabbing exhibitions in the popular SMART Applications Zone. In the SMART Transportation area, the automatic operation pavilion featured a car equipped with open-source software for autonomous driving. The exhibitor, Tier IV, aims to help lead the early commercialization of self-driving vehicles through the adoption of its software, Autoware, which makes it easier to develop self-driving vehicle prototypes using low-power platforms.Sony Semiconductor Solutions demonstrated a vision sensing processor designed to guide autonomous drones. Using two cameras, the processor measured the changing distance between visitors moving about the exhibit and stationary objects in real time, indicating proximity in hues of red (nearby) and blue (at a distance). Many visitors were wowed, describing the multichromatic display as futuristic.Others rode a simple wooden swing hanging by two ropes, but from dizzying heights thanks to Solidray’s Duo-Sight, a virtual reality (VR) system that projects 3D images stretching from wall to floor for immersive experiences. One visitor thrilled at how riding the swing, suspended only a few feet from the floor, felt like soaring on a flying trapeze. Target applications for the technology include virtual rides at amusement parks and presenting interior design options to homeowners.In the SMART Manufacturing area, one highlight was the demonstration by the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) of a remote-controlled Minimal Fab System designed for low-volume, high-mix chip production with little staffing. Designed to increase production efficiency, the system allows a circuit designer to manufacture a semiconductor by singlehandedly operating equipment up and down the production line. Controlling nearly 50 pieces of equipment, the Minimal Fab System on display manufactured chips that were verified for functional operation and exhibited afterwards.On the SMART Applications stage, exhibitors DENSO and Toyota Motor Corporation announced a new joint venture to conduct research and advanced development of the next-generation in-vehicle semiconductors critical to electric and autonomous vehicle innovation. The venture, operating as MIRISE Technologies, will combine Toyota’s mobility expertise with DENSO’s in-vehicle component prowess. The goal is to build a rapid, competitive development system by 2030, said Yoshifumi Kato, executive director of the DENSO Research and Development Center, and president and representative director of the venture. On track to begin work this year, MIRISE will span three fields of technology development: power electronics, sensing and SoC (System-on-a-Chip). The name MIRISE combines word the Japanese word "mirai" (future) with "rise."Business Continuity PlanningNatural disasters and other emergencies are an ongoing threat to uninterrupted business operations across the semiconductor manufacturing supply chain and particularly in earthquake-prone Japan. To better prepare for business disruptions and restore normal operations as soon as possible after disaster strikes, more companies are teaming on Business Continuity Planning (BCP).THK's Seismic Isolation Experience Car demonstrated one technology designed to help – a seismic isolation device. The car shakes like an earthquake to give people inside a taste of how a building heaves and sways during a quake with and without the device deployed. Visitors were struck by how much the isolator dampens tremors to prevent or minimize damage. In the BCP seminar, representatives from Sony Semiconductor Manufacturing, THK, DISCO and Team Engineering Consulting shared lessons learned from actual disasters and discussed the critical importance of daily disaster drills. Yukihide Keigo, Executive Engineer in charge of Products and Development at Sony Semiconductor Manufacturing, recounted how the company’s Kumamoto Prefecture plant struggled for 96 days to restore full operations after the facility sustained heavy damage in the 2016 earthquake. Keigo said the plant lacked the structural reinforcements necessary to withstand the impact and fell prey to poor planning and accountability. The Kumamoto plant has since implemented measures – structural and procedural improvements – that more accurately account for seismic risks to ensure full recovery within 56 days. The plant’s new procedures include emergency drills for staff including night-shift workers.Innovation abounds at six SuperTHEATER forumsSEMICON Japan 2019 was held in the West and South Halls of Tokyo Big Sight as organizers of the Tokyo Olympics occupied the East Hall, the exhibition's usual home at the venue, to prepare for the 2020 games. For the first time, the main stage, SuperTHEATER, was set up in the cavernous arena near the main entrance. The SuperTHEATER featured six forums over three days. Semiconductor Executive Forum – View by Top Two in the Era of Digitalization with thought leaders from IHS Markit and Sony Semiconductor Solutions SMART Connectivity Forum – Infinite World Brought by 5G Innovation with experts from Softbank and Nokia Solutions Networks SMART Transportation Forum I – Front-line of Automated Driving featuring speakers from Intel and DENSO SMART Transportation Forum II – Revolution of Sky Transportation, supported by the U.S. Commercial Service in Japan, with presenters from Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), Subaru and Bell Helicopter Manufacturing Innovation Summit – Issues and Innovation: What will Drive Growth to 2030 featuring thought leaders from VLSI Research, Applied Materials, KLA, Nikon and Tokyo Electron Mirai Vision Forum – Future Relation of Technology and Body 2.0 with speakers from Leave a Nest, Ory Lab and Autonomous Control Systems Laboratory The Mirai Vision Forum highlighted advanced technologies that could lead to societal improvements. One presenter, Kentaro Yoshifuji, CEO at Ory Lab, recalled how, as a child, he once stayed home from school while recovering from an illness. His imagination in full flight, the youngster imagined having a clone that could attend school and be with his classmates. The experience eventually inspired him to develop OriHime, a robot that gives socially isolated people a way to communicate with friends or colleagues remotely. Originally developed for physically impaired people, OriHime today is used to help the able-bodied. The robot is situated with the companion and the user operates OriHime remotely. A camera and monitor in OriHime’s face provide the visual and audio connection and the user controls the device with a smartphone or tablet or, for those who are paralyzed, through eye movement. One potential application: With OriHime stationed at a business office, working mothers could use OriHime to telecommute to better balance their careers with their parenting responsibilities at home. The robot would be a mother’s go-between, enabling her to communicate directly with colleagues.The next generation of innovators also took the stage as five teams presented innovative business ideas in friendly competition. The top prize in The TECH CAMP Hackathon went to the group that hatched an ingenious plan to develop a jacket that trains users to move their bodies in preprogrammed ways. For example, legendary Japanese professional baseball player Shigeo Nagashima could wear the gear while batting to program the device, then give the jacket to someone who’s never swung a baseball bat. The jacket would help the user replicate Nagashima’s swing. Now comes the real work of any innovator – executing on the vision.And then came two soccer-playing artificial intelligence (AI) robots that squared off and ... Scored! The demonstration by the Toyota National College of Technology started as a research project by Toyota National College students in 2002. The young innovators designed and developed all the robotic hardware and software from scratch. Looking ahead to SEMICON Japan 2020!SEMICON Japan 2019 not only gathered leading Japanese semiconductor materials and manufacturing equipment providers to demonstrate their latest innovations. The premiere regional event also provided insights on key trends critical to the entire electronics manufacturing supply chain. It depends on the interest of each visitor of course. For Instagrammers, the April cherry blossoms or November autumn leaves – a masterpiece of art with their rainbow gold, red and yellow hues – are ideal for snapping memorable pictures. For foodies, winter delights with tuna, toro sushi and other seafood at their tastiest. Wagyu peaks in richness, too, when the cold weather sets in. For anime and manga enthusiasts, August is definitely the time to visit. That’s when COMIKET, the world’s largest comic market – drawing more than a half million people – takes place in Tokyo. But for people in the electronics value chain, the perfect time to pack their bags and hop a flight to Tokyo is December, when SEMICON Japan – December 11-13 at Tokyo Big Sight – opens its doors with its own form of hospitality.Why should you attend? Here are the five top reasons.Reason 1: Japan is home to leading electronics industry suppliersAccording to VLSI Technology, seven of the top 15 semiconductor equipment suppliers in 2018 are headquartered in Japan, and many Japanese companies also lead backend equipment segments. For decades, Japanese companies have supplied about one third of the equipment for the global semiconductor equipment industry, according to SEMI and the Semiconductor Equipment Association of Japan (SEAJ). Most of these companies typically set up a booth on the SEMICON Japan show floor to welcome your visit.True, many Japanese suppliers also exhibit at SEMICON shows outside of Japan to meet with customers. But you will find many more engineers, managers and executives of equipment suppliers on their home ground at SEMICON Japan, where suppliers typically debut new equipment. Their booths are also ideal locations for visitors to meet with suppliers to ask questions, exchange opinions and negotiate new business deals.Japanese materials suppliers enjoy an even larger market share, providing about half the materials for the global semiconductor industry. These suppliers dominate in silicon wafers, photomasks, photoresists, sputtering targets, packaging substrates, bonding wires, leadframes, mold compounds and wafer level packaging dielectrics. Unlike equipment suppliers, not all materials companies exhibit. Instead, many participate as speakers and attend to connect with customers.Reason 2: Get ready for the next semiconductor industry upturnA year ago, in late 2018, we expected chip inventory to stabilize by mid-2019, yet the industry still struggles with high inventory overall and low average selling price for memory. The SEMI 2019 equipment billing forecast was lowered accordingly from -4.0 percent growth (2018 year-end forecast) to -18.4 percent (2019 mid-year forecast). However, the two forecasts still predict positive growth in 2020. As SEMICON Japan 2019 is underway, we should be at the beginning of the next upturn.The chart below shows that more wafer process fabs will start construction in 2020 than this year. Custer Consulting Group also pointed to “a resumption in semiconductor chip and capital equipment growth in late 2019 or early 2020.” (Please see article: Semiconductor Industry Upturn by Early 2020?.)With better times ahead, SEMICON Japan 2019 will be an opportune time to exchange opinions with key players across the supply chain and start negotiations for the coming robust recovery of the equipment, components and materials markets.Reason 3: Glimpse the future at SuperTHEATERSEMICON Japan SuperTHEATER will feature industry and technology insights from global visionaries. She will explore the growing role of innovation and social responsibility and how the World Economic Forum is addressing associated challenges. The opening keynote session will also feature Nandan Nayampally, vice president and general manager of the Immersive Experience group at Arm.In all, the SuperTHEATER will host seven keynote forums over three days at SEMICON Japan including: Semiconductor Executive Forum – Terushi Shimizu, representative director and president of Sony Semiconductor Solutions, and Atsuyoshi Koike, president of Western Digital Japan, will discuss their business strategies and prospects. Manufacturing Innovation Summit – Executives from Applied Materials, KLA, Nikon and Tokyo Electron will discuss business and technology issues as well as innovations that will drive growth to 2030.
