Newly Formed Digital Twins in Manufacturing Task Force

By Michelle Sun (SEMI), James Moyne (Applied Materials and University of Michigan)

Since the formal introduction of digital twins by Dr. Michael Grieves at the University of Michigan in 2002, the concept has been quickly gaining momentum within the semiconductor industry. Following their lead, the North America Information and Control Technical Committee voted to form a Digital Twins in Manufacturing Task Force at SEMICON West in October 2025.

The purpose of the task force is manifold: first, to propose definitions for the terms ‘Digital Twin’ and the ‘Digital Twins Framework’, then to define internal digital twin components for outlining baseline capabilities, discovery mechanisms, prediction quality metrics, a unified model interface, and lifecycle management. While the concept has gained popularity within the semiconductor industry, the term itself has since morphed into multiple definitions. Referring to Asset Admin Shell (AAS) and ISO 23247, the task force hopes to use these resources to identify requirements and provide a unified framework for the industry that enables interoperability and effective deployment across diverse use cases.

The task force held its first kickoff meeting on Tuesday, November 18, 2025. The attendees included representatives from Intel, TEL, IBM, Cimetrix, and PEER Group. The group reviewed SEMI E133, Specification for Automated Process Control Systems Interface, ISO 23247 and AAS, and discussed ways to break down the concept of Digital Twins so it does not conflict with these other frameworks. They also discussed the limitations of Digital Twins.
