Korean Translation of SEMI S2-0724 Released, with Joint Effort from Over 20 Local Industry Experts
By Seohyeong Bae, SEMI Korea
SEMI has officially released the latest Korean translation of SEMI S2-0724, Environmental, Health and Safety Guideline for Semiconductor Manufacturing Equipment. This version reflects the updates issued in July 2024 and aims to significantly improve industry accessibility by addressing language barriers that have long challenged domestic engineers and suppliers.
SEMI S2 is a globally recognized safety guideline essential for the design and safety evaluation of semiconductor manufacturing equipment. Since the official version is only available in English, Korean engineers and suppliers have faced difficulties in fully understanding and applying the safety requirements.
To overcome this challenge, the Korean translation underwent a two-stage technical review.
An initial review was conducted by 26 EH&S experts from major chipmakers, equipment suppliers, and certification bodies. This was followed by an in-depth, secondary review by a core team from five different organizations – ASM, PCA, Safe World Engineering, Salus Engineering International, and Samsung Electronics – who carefully verified terminology and field applicability to ensure clarity and accuracy.
SeungKyung Nam, Senior technologist at ASM and one of the project’s co-leaders, emphasized the significance of the updated translation.
“This version corrects previous translation errors and accurately reflects the latest safety requirements. It will be a valuable resource for professionals working in equipment safety design and evaluation.”
HyunJun Park, Manager at PCA and fellow co-leader, highlighted the benefit for smaller companies:
“This translation will help SMEs and suppliers better understand global safety standards, reducing confusion and delays in certification and evaluation processes caused by language barriers.”
Since 2013, SEMI has worked to improve accessibility by translating key standards into Korean. To date, seven standards—including S2, S6, S10, S14, S21, S23, and S29—have been published in Korean.
