Charting the Path to Optimized Future Factories

SEMICON West 2024 in review, what’s new, and an invitation to the first-ever SEMI Global Standards Summit

By Paul Trio, Director, Standards, SEMI

SEMICON West Recap

The North America Standards Meetings at SEMICON West 2024 hosted eight (8) technical committees and over 40 Task Forces drawing over 130 attendees during July 8-11. SEMICON West 2024 also surpassed expectations with the event, themed “Stronger Together,” drawing nearly 20% more attendees and 12% more booths on the floor. Our Standards meetings covered various critical efforts from facilities, gases and liquid chemicals to EHS to factory automation and cybersecurity. At the Standards Awards & Networking Event, we honored leaders who helped shaped the Standards Program as we know it today as well as those who have been instrumental in driving key standards activities to successful completion.

From the SEMI Technology Communities front, the Semiconductor Manufacturing Cybersecurity Consortium (SMCC) hosted its second Global Cybersecurity Executive Forum and held working sessions focused on factory cybersecurity implementation as well as international regulation and specs focused on creating a semiconductor manufacturing profile for NIST CSF2.0. Meanwhile, the Electronic Materials Group (EMG) featured an AI/ML session on the TechTALK stage. The often-standing room only event featured speakers from Athinia, GlobalFoundries, Applied Materials, and EMD. The EMG General Meeting witnessed the formation of a new subcommittee for compound semiconductors to address the unique opportunities and challenges in this space. Attendees of the Semiconductor Components, Instruments and Subsystems (SCIS) meeting heard updates on the ongoing subfab efforts, progress on the parts clean activity (testing and measuring methods of contaminants in materials and environments that can affect the cleanliness of chamber components, and surface cleanliness of the chamber components themselves), as well as a revisiting of the part traceability discussions. Last and certainly not the least, the Test Vision Symposium drew its record number of attendees with nearly 400 SEMICON West goers listening in to sessions around “Test in the Semiconductor Future.”

I wish to thank all of our SEMI and SEMI Standards Program Members for making SEMICON West 2024 such an incredible event. We hope to see you all next year for SEMICON West + FLEX 2025 taking place October 7-9 in Phoenix, Arizona. But before that, please check out SEMIEXPO In the Heartland – SEMI’s new annual event featuring discussions on the deployment of smart manufacturing tools, technologies, and methods supporting the creation of semiconductors, as well as a gathering of stakeholders in the semiconductor, sensor, and mobility ecosystems to address technical issues and supply chain dynamics. SEMIEXPO In the Heartland takes place on April 1-2, 2025 in Indianapolis, IN.

Global SEMI Standards Summit 2024

As Standards development efforts and Technology Community initiatives continue, there remain several critical topics that our industry is working diligently to address. Topics such as advanced packaging, cybersecurity, as well as supply chain and critical materials (and their impact to the environment) are considered strategic areas needing industry collaboration.  Many of these areas also need standards, and the next generation specs and guidelines will need to be engineered to meet the challenges of both today and tomorrow. The magnitude of these standardization efforts will require engagement from all stakeholders in the value chain as well as multiple SDOs coordinating and collaborating with each other.

Given this, SEMI will hold its first-ever Global Standards Summit, bringing together industry stakeholders to identify standards-critical areas and work towards developing an industry standardization strategy for the next 3- and 7-year time horizons. This inaugural event will take place at SEMICON Japan 2024 and will cover key topics including: future factories, packaging architectures & materials, and environmental sustainability. I wish to invite you to this very important event. We hope to see you at the first-ever Global Standards Summit on December 12 in Tokyo.
