New Standard on Redefining Display Warm-up Assessment for Diverse Technologies

By Myong Young Lee, LG Electronics

SEMI D83, Test Method for Warm-Up Properties of Display Picture Quality, published in February 2023, specifies the measurement of the stabilization time for a display’s optical characteristics (display warm-up time). The Picture Quality Evaluation Task Force of the Flat Panel Display Korea Technical Committee Chapter recently developed this evaluation method that takes into account picture quality and can replace the existing measuring method that only measures and evaluates the luminance stabilization time for display warm-up.

In the recent display market, various types of display technologies coexist: traditional LCD TVs, LCD displays using Mini LED backlight, OLED using WRGB 4 sub-pixel structure or QD layer, and displays using Micro LED. With the development of HDR technology, the accuracy of color and luminance reproduction has greatly improved, and increased the importance of how quickly the performance of the display can stabilize and express the best picture quality in order to satisfy the demands of consumers enjoying movies at home.

SEMI D83 proposes a new method to simultaneously measure and evaluate not only the luminance of white, but also the stabilization time of six major optical features such as black, contrast, color temperature, EOTF, and color. In fact, when measuring the picture quality stabilization time of a display based on this evaluation method, the stabilization time for each picture quality item was observed to be very different depending on the type of display In the future, we expect to be able to provide consumers with information about which displays' picture quality characteristics can stabilize quickly and enable them to experience the best picture quality possible.

When researching and developing display technologies, this measuring method is considered to be very important to evaluate picture quality of a panel or display product.

In the future, we expect that this evaluation method will become a new standard for the design and evaluation for the development of display panels and TV products.
