SEMICON Europa 2024 Standards Highlights
By Kevin Nguyen, SEMI
It has been a remarkable year for European Standards development as the Europe Technical Committee (TC) Chapters continues to crank out more and more Standards activities in 2024. The Compound Semiconductor Materials (CSM) Europe TC Chapter held on November 14 in conjunction with SEMICON Europa approved a new standard on Specification for Silicon Carbide Engineered Substrates [7225], led by Enrica Cela (SOITEC) under the Silicon Carbide Engineered Substrate Task Force. Impressively, the Task Force completed the project within a year. Ballot 7225, which includes technical changes, is currently in the ratification process by the Global Compound Semiconductor Materials Technical Committee (cycle 9-2024).
In addition, the CSM TC Chapter appointed Christian Kranert (Fraunhofer IISB), who has been leading several task forces, as second co-chair, joining Arnd-Dietrich Weber (SiCrystal). With their leadership, the TC Chapter is well-positioned to drive advancements in standardization.
The Silicon Wafer TC Chapter also held its annual meeting at SEMICON Europa. Five ballots passed the TC Chapter review including Document 7192, Revision of SEMI M73-1013E (Reapproved 1019), Test Method for Extracting Relevant Characteristics from Measured Wafer Edge Profiles. This revision, driven by a joint effort between Siltronic and SUMCO, addresses chipmakers’ requests for a new metric appropriate for characterizing the transition region from wafer front surface to wafer edge front bevel.
In conclusion, the Joint Gas and Liquid Chemicals TC Chapters also conducted its meeting to raise awareness of the International Roadmap for Devices and Systems (IRDS) related to gases and liquid chemicals contaminant values. The next meeting is scheduled to take place during SEMICON Europa 2025.
