Introducing the Korea Autonomous Fab Working Group

By Natalie Shim, SEMI Korea

On Monday, November 18, 2024, the Korea Autonomous Fab Working Group (WG) was highlighted at the Semiconductor Standards Forum, hosted by the Korea Semiconductor Industry Association and the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards. This group is dedicated to advancing the complete automation and intelligence of semiconductor manufacturing processes by developing industry-wide standards through consensus among all stakeholders in the semiconductor ecosystem. The WG operates through two key subgroups, each addressing specific technical challenges.

1.    PM Automation Subgroup

This subgroup focuses on laying the groundwork for automation in semiconductor manufacturing using robots. Discussions in this subgroup center around criteria such as the safety, cleanliness, and mobility of part logistics robots, as well as the standardization of part packaging. As the initiative progresses, it aims to expand into areas such as collaborative robots (Cobots) and fully automated preventive maintenance (PM).

2.     Data & Traceability Subgroup

In collaboration with SEMI's SCIS (Semiconductor Components, Instruments, and Subsystems) and the Parts & Materials ID Task Force under the Japan Traceability Technical Committee, this subgroup works to standardize part codes, such as 2D Datamatrix and QR Codes, for automated component identification. These standards are essential for enabling smarter semiconductor manufacturing processes. Once implemented, they will enhance the traceability and management efficiency of semiconductor components while aligning with global SEMI members to ensure a harmonized approach across regions.

A defining characteristic of the Autonomous Fab WG is its inclusive approach to standard development, bringing together a diverse range of stakeholders, including chip manufacturers, equipment suppliers, and solution providers. This collaboration ensures that the standards are rooted in practical, real-world operational experience, making them highly applicable and effective.

The WG continues to explore new areas for standardization to enhance flexibility and efficiency in semiconductor manufacturing. Through its collaborative efforts and focus on addressing key technical challenges, the Autonomous Fab Working Group is leading the way toward a fully automated and intelligent semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem, setting the stage for innovation and industry-wide advancement.
