Highlights from SEMICON Korea

By Natalie Shim, SEMI Korea

SEMICON Korea 2023 was held at COEX in Samsung-dong, Seoul, in early February. The event brought together over 57,000 visitors from around the world, showcasing not only major semiconductor manufacturers like Samsung Electronics and SK hynix, but also 450 companies involved in design, wafer processing, packaging, and testing that are critical to semiconductor manufacturing processes. SEMICON Korea provides an excellent platform for semiconductor professionals worldwide to come together and share their knowledge and expertise.

This year’s show featured keynote speeches from leading semiconductor companies such as Joseph Macri, Chief Technology Officer of AMD. He gave the opening keynote speech on the topic of "Breaking Moore's Law in the Interconnected World". Other notable speakers were Eric Beyne, Vice President of IMEC, who presented on "3D Integration Technology: Support for Heterogeneous System Expansion" and Patrick Loney, Global Operations Manager of Lam Research, shared examples of innovation accelerating from research to fabs throughout the value chain.

Semiconductor manufacturing technology, next-generation test solutions, AI-based highly advanced smart manufacturing, and sustainability for carbon neutrality were also discussed at various programs including the SEMI Technology Symposium (STS), Metrology and Inspection (MI) Forum, Test Forum, Smart Manufacturing Forum, Sustainable Manufacturing Forum, and Market Trend Forum. As the talent shortage in the semiconductor industry continues to worsen, Meet the Experts and Women in Tech were also held to attract excellent talent and promote diversity in the industry.

In addition to SEMICON Korea 2023, there were several side events including industry leadership dinners, investment briefings, and purchasing consultations. At a press conference prior to the opening, SEMI Korea President, Cho Hyun-dae, stated SEMICON Korea 2023 contains everything necessary for the growth and innovation of the semiconductor industry, and that SEMI will continue to support the robust growth of the global semiconductor supply chain through various programs, not limited to SEMICON Korea.
