What does SEMICON West mean to you?

By Paul Trio, Director, Standards, SEMI

The frenzy of commuters and rideshare drivers blazing down Howard Street, the sea of people in business coats with their badges flapping on a beautiful San Francisco day, and achieving your steps goal well before the day is over…it must be SEMICON West!

SEMICON West connects the entire extended electronics supply chain in one place, at one time. It is the venue to re-connect with your contacts, customers, partners; build new networks; and drive your business forward. Held July 12-14 at the Moscone Center in downtown San Francisco, the event drew thousands of attendees from all over the world with the majority of its visitors, nearly 80%, have purchasing influence for their companies.

Amidst the hustle and bustle of SEMICON West, the North America (NA) Standards meetings were held on July 11-14 in the upper floors of Moscone South. Our Program Members got to re-connect among the seven technical committees and over 50 task force meetings, advanced current standardization efforts, and initiated new activities. Among those was the formation of the Environmental Performance Rating (EPR) Task Force chartered under the North America Chapter of the EHS Standards Technical Committee. The new EPR task force will be responsible for developing a method for rating the environmental performance of certain components (e.g., vacuum pumps) used in semiconductor manufacturing, based in part on the S23 Safety Guideline.

SEMICON is also a place to learn something new or expand your sphere of influence – whichever side you may be – whether it be from the exhibitor booths, smart pavilions, various summits & symposiums, and other technical sessions. The NA Standards meetings also featured two workshops on SEMI C10 and the recently published SEMI E183 Standard. Called “Determining the Detection Limit,” the SEMI C10 workshop explored how applying this standard to detection limit procedures helps improve yields and manufacturing processes. Meanwhile, the SEMI E183 workshop took a closer look on the Rich Interactive Test Database (RITdb) standard and how its implementation for test floor data and events sharing can improve the productivity of test operations. The SEMI E183 workshop also marked the return of Standards Technical Education Program (STEP) courses. We plan to bring more STEP courses and Standards workshops in the coming months.

The advancement of SEMI Standards is made possible by its Program Members. During SEMICON West, we take the opportunity, not only to network, but to recognize Standards members who have gone above and beyond in their service to the industry. At the Standards Awards & Networking Event, held July 12, we honored 13 individuals for their contribution, leadership, and dedication to the Program. These volunteers were recognized for their contributions in areas such as EHS, factory automation software, and MEMS. Similarly, leaders that bridged both global and multi-disciplinary efforts of this international program as well as those that represented device maker interest were also recognized at the networking event.

The NA Standards Meetings at SEMICON West have undoubtedly connected attendees, educated and influenced the minds, celebrated the contributors, and continued the charge of advancing the industry. In the spirit of SEMICON West, I would say mission accomplished. What was SEMICON West 2022 to you?

Certainly, there is more work to do. And the SEMICON experience continues with Taiwan, China, Europa, and Japan just around the corner. Come join us!
