New Proposal for Equipment Operator Access Management
By Michelle Sun, SEMI HQ
In a typical manufacturing equipment setting, most operating equipment does not identify the specific operators during their interactions. This makes it difficult for the user to manage the equipment and limits the visibility of specific operator activity on the manufacturing equipment.
SEMI Draft Document 6926, Specification for Equipment Operator Access Management and Monitoring, was authorized by the Information & Control North America TC Chapter Meeting at the Spring Meetings in March 2022.
By creating a standard set of guidelines defining best practices for access management and user activity monitoring, the implementation of such guidelines intends to improve overall equipment security by mitigating possible threat vectors due to unauthorized access. In addition, equipment users would be able to take advantage of externalized role management at the factory level through role-based access control. Among other guidelines, this standard will address requirements to track and log interactions within the equipment by defining requirements concerning log content, as well as mandatory vs. optional interactions with the equipment.
This effort is being driven by the Fab & Equipment Computer and Device Security (CDS) Task Force. The task force is being led by members from Intel and Cimetrix. Other suppliers and users including ASML and ARMIS have recently joined the task force. If you would like to participate in the Task Force, please contact Michelle Sun at [email protected].
