Overview of SEMI Software Standards Tutorial in Korea
By Natalie Shim, SEMI Korea

A SEMI Standards Software Tutorial was held early November in Coex, Seoul. It is the eight-annual event that provides insight about the SEMI Software standards, especially in the areas that cover SEMI equipment communications standards (SECS), generic model for communications and control of manufacturing equipment (GEM), and equipment data acquisition (EDA).
Almost 120 attendees from over 20 companies participated in this event. That is three times higher than it has been since its first event held in 2015. This year showed an increase of diversification within the companies that attended the event, most of which were local.
Typically, engineers related to front-end processes were the main demand for education. However, this year more than 45% of attendees were from back-end process automation. The recent technology trends for the back-end process supports this new phenomenon.
In the past, many local equipment companies were outsourcing automation solutions, most of which were coming from international companies and solution providers. However, there is a trend to supply automation solutions together with semiconductor manufacturing equipment among local suppliers. A record of almost 60% of this year’s attendees were from local companies.
The results of this analysis will be used to plan educational materials to accommodate the needs of the industry. In addition, it can be shared as a reference when developing SEMI Standards in the future.
