Data Standardization, Protection

By Paul Trio, Director, Standard, SEMI

There has been a flurry of activities in SEMI Standards since our last newsletter and there are no signs of slowing down as we reach the end of this year.

The North America Standards Fall 2022 meetings were held on November 7-10 at SEMI Headquarters in Milpitas, California. The meetings hosted eight technical committees and over 40 task forces during the week. A new task force called the Equipment Data Publication was chartered under the North America Information & Control Technical Committee Chapter to help address the growing number of complex process and yield issues requiring correlation of equipment data with other process related data for analysis.

Meanwhile, the North America Metrics Technical Committee Chapter met in October and approved the formation of the License Server Certification Task ForceThe task force is chartered to develop standards to verify the authenticity of design automation software license servers in order to prevent unauthorized cloning of said servers. The resulting standard would define the parameters collected and used to generate a unique identifier (“fingerprint”) for each license server at a design software customer. This effort originated from the SEMI Electronic System Design Alliance (ESDA) Technology Community.

In September, a Semiconductor Cybersecurity Global Summit was held during SEMICON Taiwan addressing themes such as trust, resiliency, and framework. A cybersecurity session is also being planned for SEMICON West in 2023. SEMI published its first cybersecurity standards earlier this year with SEMI E187 and SEMI E188.

The Europe Standards Meetings were also held during SEMICON Europa and marked the return of its face-to-face meetings. The meetings were held on November 15-16 at the International Congress Center in Munich, next to the Messe. The meeting set hosted three technical committees – Silicon Wafer, Compound Semiconductor Materials, and Gases & Liquid Chemicals – as well as a number of task force meetings. While the European Standards members have been meeting and participating in virtual discussions, a face-to-face venue has not occurred since 2019. More importantly, the much needed in-person networking not only emphasized current efforts to update and maintain existing standards, but also underscored the need for new ones. Follow-up meetings are planned for Spring Meetings 2023 as well as in SEMICON Europa 2023.

Finally, SEMI will be hosting its Standards meetings taking place in conjunction with SEMICON Japan. Several technical committee and task force meetings will be held during the week of December 12-16. More information about these meetings as well as upcoming SEMI Standards events in 2023, can be found on our events page.

As 2022 comes to a close, I wish to thank you, our Standards Members, for your support and contribution to our Program. On behalf of the SEMI Standards Team, we look forward to working with you and supporting you in 2023.
