Newly Published Test Methods on Displays Characteristics

By Natalie Shim, SEMI Korea

SEMI recently published two new standards SEMI D81, Test Method for Dimming Properties of Flat Panel Displays and SEMI D82, Test Method for Viewing Angle of Flat Panel Displays.

These two standards were developed by the Korean Flat Panel Display Metrology Global Technical Committee and are expected to increase the reliability of the display performance indication provided by the manufacturer and improve the picture quality improvement technology.

The main contents of each standard are as follows.

SEMI D81 - The performance of the dimming technology affects the image quality of the display. Even though there are several measuring methods for display luminance, they are not enough to represent the luminance of small sizes are formed less than 10% of the active area. The new measurement method measures the luminance characteristics of dimming technology that operates according to the signal from small sizes. It also evaluates whether the display accurately represents the input signal without fakes.

SEMI D82 - The viewing angle characteristic of display panels are one of the most important optical performance relevant to viewing directional image quality. To evaluate native properties of contemporary flat panel displays, the viewing angle can be measured based on variation of chromaticity and luminance by the viewing direction as well as contrast. This standard introduces how to calculate and decide viewing angles for the viewing directional performance of flat panel displays which are viewing angles related to tone reproduction and color reproduction as well as conventional contrast viewing angle.
