Korean Translations of SEMI International Standards for Environment and Safety Underway
By Natalie Shim, SEMI Korea
As SEMI safety standards are very actively applied in the Korean semiconductor industry, SEMI Korea has been steadily translating representative SEMI safety standards organically connected to SEMI S2 such as SEMI S6, S10, and S23 since 2014.
This year, SEMI S8, which deals with ergonomic design principles of semiconductor manufacturing equipment and its considerations, and SEMI S22, for electrical design principles of semiconductor manufacturing equipment, are in progress, and Korean translations are scheduled to be published as early as the first half of 2022.
Semiconductor experts such as SEMES, ASM, Salus, Safe Ward Engineering, and ICR will participate in the technical review to actively utilize terms used in the actual field and further enhance the sophistication of the Korean version.
For over 45 years, SEMI has developed safety guidelines that define the semiconductor equipment requirements for environment, health, and safety to the industry. These standards are the only ones used in manufacturing industries throughout the world, including semiconductors, LEDs, and display devices. For Korean users who have difficulty in understanding standards written in English, SEMI has been localizing them into Korean language and holds training sessions annually for personnel who use the standards.
SEMI S8: SAFETY GUIDELINE FOR ERGONOMICS ENGINEERING OF SEMICONDUCTOR MANUFACTURING EQUIPMENT
It provides ergonomic design principles and considerations for semiconductor manufacturing equipment. It also promotes compatibility between the user and equipment in the manufacturing environment. By using this Safety Guideline, equipment suppliers and users can collaborate and design equipment that will minimize fatigue and injury by fitting the equipment to the expected body size, strength, and range of motion characteristics of the user. SEMI S8 provides equipment effectiveness, along with worker safety, convenience, and comfort when operating equipment.
SEMI S22: GUIDE FOR THE ELECTRICAL DESIGN OF SEMICONDUCTOR MANUFACTURING EQUIPMENT.
It provides a set of design-based electrical safety considerations for production equipment used in the semiconductor industry. Basic product safety concerns are addressed by satisfying the design, construction, and testing principles set in this Safety Guideline for protection against electrical shock or fire risk. The intent is to provide a design based electrical document that will be useful to both design engineers and evaluators, in order to facilitate electrical safety in the equipment.
