Korea Explosion-Proof Webinar Series

By Natalie Shim, SEMI Korea

SEMI Korea recently hosted an explosion-proof webinar series from June 25 to July 22, 2020. It was the first event related to the local regulations in Korea. Around 200 attendees from 45 different companies joined the series and evaluated it positively. Two speakers, Professor Won Baek Yang (Soongsil Cyber University) and Chun Eob Lee (CEO, IECT), played a great role in the series’ success.

Over the last 10 years, there have been several explosions in semiconductor fabs which caused serious issues and the government has begun to pay attention to the perils of the facilities. As a result, the Korean government has ordered semiconductor manufacturers to apply the Article 230 of the Rules on Occupational Safety and Health Standards and KS C IEC 60079-10 to prevent explosions in their fabs. However, many issues have emerged in applying the regulation to the semiconductor industry,  increasing the burden on manufacturers. Given these circumstances, it seems that the manufacturers need to collaborate with their suppliers as the entire supply chain will ultimately be impacted.

For this reason, SEMI organized the webinar series to share relevant information to members so that they can respond to the needs of customers. The initial webinar series focused on general explosion-proof concepts and introduction of the current local regulations as a first step. Subsequent webinars will be planned in the second half of 2020, focusing on practical information and case studies. Longer-term, it is hoped that relevant best practices shared in the webinar series will be brought to the SEMI EHS Standards Committee to be considered for incorporation into SEMI Safety Guidelines.
