SEMICON Japan 2019 Standards Awards

By Junko Collins, SEMI Japan

The SEMI International Standards Program is operated in all major electronics manufacturing regions including Americas, Europe, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and China to increase the manufacturing efficiency and interoperability. Over 5,000 volunteers representing over 2,000 companies work in 20 global technical committees and over 200 task forces to find solutions to common technology challenges.

At SEMICON Japan held December 11-13 at Tokyo Big Sight, Tokyo, an award ceremony was held for those who have been recognized for outstanding achievement by the Japan Regional Standards Committee (JRSC) during the SEMI Standard Awards and Friendship Party.

About 30 standard meetings were held, with a total of about 300 participants during SEMICON Japan 2019. Including these, more than 150 meetings were held throughout the year of 2019 in Japan, including 16 Technical Committees' seasonal meetings, totaling nearly 1,500 people in attendance. (This number includes those who have participated remotely via the Web.)

The "SEMI Japan International Cooperation Award" was awarded to Ms. Supika Mashiro. This award is given to individuals or groups who have made significant contributions to overcoming language and culture differences, coordinating between international organizations, and solving major international issues.

Contamination and particles in advanced semiconductor manufacturing have a major impact on the reliability and yield of semiconductors, which is a mid and long-term issue. Ms. Mashiro greatly contributed to the global collaboration of SEMI Standard activities with SCIS (Semiconductor Components, Instruments and Subsystems), a SEMI Technology Community in North America. In addition, she resumed the Japan Metrics Japan TC Chapter with a focus on launching new task force activities, and she contributed to strengthening the collaboration of SEMI Standards activities between North American and Japan.

The “Special Award” is given to members in recognition of their outstanding contributions. This year, Mr. Jun Iisaka, Mr. Takahiko Imasu, Mr. Naohiro Kamiya and Mr. Atsushi Horibe were awarded as a group.

Through the development of SEMI A2, Specification for Surface Mount Assembler Smart Hookup (SMASH), their experiences of equipment control in SMT assembly lines enabled to develop new Standard SEMI A2 in a short period of time. The SEMI SMT-ELS (Surface Mount Technology - Equipment Link Standards) Standards suite for SMT assembly line provides a robust universal interface and adds data communication capabilities to make assembly line smarter.

The "SEMI Japan Achievement Award" recognizes the members of the standards committee of Japan and the chairs of the Technical Committees. It is awarded to those who have been a member of the Technical Committee for many years, been an active chair, as well as the establishment and reorganization of the committee, and the establishment of many task forces. This year was awarded to Kenji Yamagata

As chair of the Physical Interfaces & Carriers (PI&C) Committee, Mr. Yamagata has long supported standard development activities. In addition, as a chairman of the Japan Regional Standards Committee for four years, he contributed to the operation with his great leadership. His charming personality not only increased the unity of the participants in standards discussions, but also built strong friendships among standards members even outside of standards activities.
