Display Brightness Calculation to Match the Human Perception
By Jongho Chong, Samsung Display and Natalie Shim, SEMI Korea
SEMI D75, Test Method for Color Reproduction and Perceptual Contrast of Display, specifies measurement conditions and methods for describing the visual color quality in three-dimensional color space, and the perceived contrast with perceptual parameters in color electronic display devices.
As the characteristics of the display industry in which the specifications of the display are being used as marketing tools, the industry needs a way to effectively measure the high-quality characteristics of 4K and 8K displays, such as wide color, very low black and high-luminance. The Korea Perceptual Image Quality Task Force has been revising SEMI D75 to better express the physical color performance of high-quality displays than the existing methods. [SEMI Draft Document 6659]
This new test method is to calculate the color volume and perceptual contrast length with measurement data of 1D LMD and 2D imaging LMD. So far, the various box patterns with primary colors (like red, green and blue), black and white have been used to measure the display image quality with the 1D LMD. But depending on the display set imaging process algorithm, the measurement data between box pattern and real image is different even though the APL (average picture level) is the same. So not only the 1D sop LMD but also the use of the 2D imaging LMD should be added as amendment contents. With the 2D imaging LMD, it would be possible to measure the halo phenomena of LCD and real sharp line at the edge area between dark and bright object As a result of the measurement, we could get the human perceptual luminance at the peak area and dark background scene and color reproduction capability by using color appearance model (CIECAM16) which is announced by the CIE in 2016.
The Korea Perceptual Image Quality Task Force led by Samsung Display and LG Display is under the FPD Metrology Korea Technical Committee Chapter. The task force seeks to develop the technical standards for measuring perceptual color characteristic visual displays. In addition, SEMI Draft Document 6614, New Standard: Test Method for Diming Property for Flat Panel Displays , is under development.
