Energy Collaborative Report: Key Challenges and Potential Solutions for Expansion and Procurement of Low-Carbon Electricity

Scope 3 Category 11 GHG Assessment: Guidelines for the Semiconductor Sector

S3  -  Startups for Sustainable Semiconductors:  A Model for Ecosystem-Collaborative Industrial Decarbonization

The program seeks to ease the friction startups may experience in accessing the industry, with the ultimate goal to accelerate decarbonization timelines of the semiconductor ecosystem as a whole. By collaborating in this way, intensive competition gives way to sector advancement on a larger and more efficient scale to the benefit of the sector and sustainability overall. This paper provides the framework and metrics of the program as a roadmap to other funders, as well as some background on the sustainability challenges facing the semiconductor industry for potential applicants.

This report uses the Nasdaq Sustainable Lens™, an AI-powered ESG intelligence platform, to analyze and assess the maturity level of each segment of the semiconductor value chain based on publicly available sustainability and climate information of 100 leading semiconductor companies against TCFD recommendations. We reviewed over 2,200 corporate annual financial reports, sustainability reports, low-carbon transition and climate action plans and other sustainability and climate information released between 2021 and 2023. The platform uncovered five key takeaways which are highlighted in the report.

The Guidelines were created to establish a comprehensive framework that promotes clarity and consistency in accounting for Scope 3.1 emissions across the semiconductor industry. It provides guidance for overcoming shared challenges faced by companies in assessing Scope 3.1 emissions. The Guidelines' intended audience is SCC member companies and other organizations operating in the semiconductor industry, who seek to enhance their Scope 3.1 carbon footprint assessment. The Guidelines are founded upon established international standards, notably the GHG Protocol.
