How Industry Trends Are Shaping Standards Development
By Paul Trio, Director, Standards, SEMI
The global semiconductor industry continues at a brisk pace, as it moves toward a $1 trillion global market, driven by sustained investment in advanced logic, memory, and AI‑enabled technologies, along with strong demand for advanced nodes and continued capacity expansion. Our recent SEMICON events featured sessions on AI‑driven manufacturing, advanced packaging, smart manufacturing, cybersecurity, sustainability, workforce development, and supply chain resilience—illustrating how technology, policy, and collaboration are shaping industry innovation.
We are also seeing the impact of these industry trends reflected in SEMI Standards activities. New Standards initiatives focused on maintenance robot communication and robot safety are supporting more autonomous fab operations. In parallel, the establishment of the Digital Twins in Manufacturing Task Force reflects growing industry demand for standardized frameworks to support virtual modeling, predictive maintenance, and overall fab optimization. Additional SEMI Standards activities are addressing data integration, equipment behavior, and system‑level coordination for deposition and ion implant components. There are also new Standards efforts focused on yield enhancement and process automation. For example, a newly approved activity will establish a guide for AFM‑based roughness measurement on silicon wafer surfaces, while another new effort addresses material handoff—including carriers, wafers, reticles, and trays—between active and passive equipment, supporting AMHS transport in semiconductor assembly and test (AT) manufacturing.
Many of these manufacturing trends, along with other critical topics, will continue to be discussed at the upcoming SEMI Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing Conference (ASMC). Taking place on May 11-14 in Albany, New York, the ASMC 2026 sessions will cover areas such as yield enhancement, advanced metrology, contamination‑free manufacturing, big data management and machine learning, factory automation, novel devices, and wafer‑level manufacturing, among many others. Along with other co-located SEMI events such as Women in Semiconductor and SEMIU, ASMC provides an outstanding technical forum and serves as an ideal venue to host our upcoming North America Standards Meetings. The 2026 NA Standards Meetings at ASMC will host nine Technical Committees and more than 30 task forces, along with a dedicated networking reception, creating opportunities for Standards participants to engage with one another and with the broader ASMC community. While many recent Standards meetings have been held on the West Coast, this event brings our community to the East Coast, expanding access and enabling deeper engagement with a broader cross‑section of SEMI members. We invite you to join us for the North America Standards Meetings—and to register for ASMC to take full advantage of this exceptional co‑located event. See you in Albany!
