New SEMI White Paper Offers Guidance on SEMI E187 Cybersecurity Standard Compliance for Semiconductor Manufacturing
By Mayura Padmanabhan, SEMI HQ
Cyber threats continue to increase at an alarming rate and the semiconductor industry, central to everything from consumer electronics to national defense, has become a prime target. In response, SEMI and the Semiconductor Manufacturing Cybersecurity Consortium (SMCC) have released a pivotal new white paper: “SEMI E187 Compliance Guidance”
About the SEMI E187 Standard
Introduced in 2022, the SEMI E187-0122 standard establishes foundational cybersecurity requirements for semiconductor fab equipment. It defines 12 core requirements that address critical areas such as secure operating systems, patch management, secure communication protocols, access control, system hardening, and log management. The standard was developed to help both equipment suppliers and device manufacturers reduce cybersecurity risks and improve the resilience of semiconductor manufacturing environments. As the industry continues to evolve, SEMI E187 serves as a foundational requirement intended to reduce risk, secure and protect semiconductor equipment and device manufacturers.
The whitepaper, created to provide additional guidance to E187, is the result of collaboration among leading semiconductor companies, cybersecurity experts, and standards professionals from SMCC Working groups 1 and 2. It is designed to support organizations of all sizes in elevating their cybersecurity posture and achieving compliance with SEMI E187.
- Detailed rationale for each E187 requirement, explaining its cybersecurity relevance.
- Implementation guidance tailored for collaboration between DMs and OEMs.
- Artifacts and examples such as OS support tables, secure protocol recommendations, vulnerability scanning tools, and network diagrams.
- Best practices for system hardening, anti-malware compatibility, access control, and log management.
This white paper is essential for:
- Equipment suppliers developing new fab tools
- Device manufacturers defining cybersecurity requirements
- Security and compliance professionals in semiconductor manufacturing
- IT/OT teams responsible for equipment integration and risk management
This white paper serves as a practical companion to the SEMI E187 standard, helping stakeholders navigate compliance with confidence. By aligning shared expectations and best practices, the industry can collectively strengthen its defenses and ensure the resilience of semiconductor manufacturing worldwide.
