Semiconductor Manufacturing Cybersecurity Consortium Launches a New Working Group for European Regulation and Cyber Resilience Act

By Mayura Padmanabhan, SEMI

On the 11th of November, the day before the start of SEMICON Europa, a strong representation of European SEMI members as well as SEMI representatives met at Siemens Headquarters (HQ) in Munich to talk about the current state of Cyber Security in our industry, and about forming a dedicated European workgroup.  Wilko Baks, Manager- Product Security and Compliance, at ASML has been appointed as the chair for this working group (WG) which will address important topics such as the European Cyber Resilience Act (CRA). After initial presentations by the Semiconductor Manufacturing Cybersecurity Consortium (SMCC) representatives, a lively discussion unfolded on the Cybersecurity challenges we are facing in Europe. This led to the main conclusion of our meeting: it makes a lot of sense to join forces in Europe under the umbrella of SEMI SMCC. To follow-up on this initial meeting, we are aiming for a workshop in February 2025 at SEMI Europe HQ in Brussels.

SMCC WG8 Kick off

The WG plans to propose the current and future SEMI Standards (SEMI E187, E188, E191) to the EU regulatory bodies as our industry’s solution to CRA compliance.  This approach to Cybersecurity will ensure:

  1. Relevance to semiconductor industry and efficiently maintained by our community
  2. Synchronized with other standards and regulatory bodies

In order to achieve this, the WG's objectives would be to:

  1. Perform gap analysis between SEMI standards and CRA and vice versa
  2. Make a plan to close the gap between SEMI and CRA – ensuring that SEMI offers complete coverage of the scope of CRA
  3. Propose the solution to the relevant regulatory representatives of the EU
  4. Make/executing a communication plan to inform the SEMI community on CRA

If you are interested in joining the EU CRA WG, please reach out to Mayura Padmanabhan from SEMI via email: [email protected]
