A New Golden Era for Standards
An era rich in industry collaboration and standards development.
By Paul Trio, Director, Standards, SEMI
With 2023 coming to a close there appears to be no slowing down of SEMI activities. Standards meetings were held at SEMI HQ (NA Fall meetings), SEMICON Europa, and SEMICON Japan. In addition, SEMI events like the Digital Twin Workshop and the Semiconductor Manufacturing Cybersecurity Workshop provided perspectives on the current state of the industry while highlighting the need for further industry collaboration. Also, Standards training and educational courses, aimed to raise awareness and foster adoption, were held in various SEMI regions including Korea, Taiwan, and Japan.
This year, we saw new SEMI initiatives get launched, from Advanced Packaging & Heterogeneous Integration (APHI) to PFAS, as part of our efforts supporting SEMI members on these critical areas. What is similarly highlighted is the need for more standards. In September, the CHIPS R&D Standards Summit held in Washington, D.C. noted several areas in need of standards including APHI/chiplets, traceability, security, EDA/design just to name a few with subsequent standards workshops planned drilling further into each of topic. The Summit also explored opportunities to foster efficient (and expedient) standards development through accelerators & incubators as well as the resources needed to build a standards-capable workforce.
The momentum established in 2023 will inevitably drive several standards initiatives in the next few years. Busy times ahead? Very likely. Exciting times? Absolutely. On behalf of the SEMI team, we wish to thank our Program members for your thought leadership, support, and for making standards development possible allowing us to provide these critical documents to our industry. We look forward to working with you and supporting you in 2024. Wishing you all happy holidays and a prosperous new year. Here’s to making 2024 the year of the standards!
