Michael Kirby received his S.B. degree in Mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and PhD from the Division of Applied Mathematics, Brown University.
He is currently a Professor in the Department of Mathematics, Colorado State University, with a joint appointment in the Department of Computer Science as well as affiliate faculty member status in the Program in Cell and Molecular Biology. His research interests include low dimensional modeling, geometric models for data, optimization and the mathematical foundations of Machine Learning. He investigates applications of this work to modeling biological data sets including to health data time series, and omics-data in the setting of infectious disease. He authored the textbook Geometric Data Analysis.
He was an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow at the Institute for Information Verarbeitung at the University of Tuebingen, Germany. He also was awarded an IBM Faculty Fellowship, and the College of Natural Sciences Award for Graduate Education.
