Nexperia in Southeast Asia
Although Nexperia is still a relatively new name, the company’s semiconductor operations in Southeast Asia date back to 1980, when it established facilities in both Malaysia and the Philippines. Its 2,000-employee Philippines factory moved to Cabuyao from Las Pinas in 1995. The company’s factory in Seremban, Malaysia, established in 1993, was part of a Philips and Motorola joint venture and today employs nearly 3,000 people.
Challenges times
Across the globe, people and companies, including Nexperia, continue to be impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The company has been strictly following the global COVID-19 guidelines from the WHO working closely with local government and health authorities to ensure the safety and wellbeing of its employees.
“We took the lead to create a safe place to stay for employees during these challenging times,” said Monette Lasala, Senior Director of Human Resources in Cabuyao. “When travelling to the facility, many of our employees rely on the transportation that we provide. We have doubled the number of buses used to pick up our factory workers since we can now use only half of the seats to ensure the required social distancing. Inside the factory, we’veprovided employees who needed it with temporary lodging that includes bedding, toiletries, towels to make their stay as comfortable as possible.”
We helped employees stay connected with their families so they can still check on their wellbeing,” Lasala added. “Furthermore, we made certain during the most difficult period of the lockdown that we created a safe but enjoyable work environment by offering engaging activities during their work breaks.”
“Actions like these have differentiated us from the rest,” she said. “We tried to create a semblance of normalcy amidst the pandemic. And it is amazing to see the commitment of our employees to serve the company. That captures the essence of Team Nexperia: flexibility, resilience and a remarkable team effort!”
“It has been our key priority to keep our employees safe at all times,” said Harith Abdullah, Vice President and General Manager of Assembly and Test in Malaysia. “Our communications to employees and their families reassured them that we had implemented robust safety measures at our facility. In addition, we are in close contact with the local government authorities and submit to regular audits to make sure that correct safety measures are in place. Despite the restrictions, it is great to see that we are still very efficient.”
Throughout this challenging period, both factories remain strongly engaged with the local communities to provide support. The global sourcing team helped secure much-needed Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) for medical staff working on the COVID-19 front lines. That included helping to repack and distribute PPE to remote villages. The factories also provided care packs for families hit hard during the lockdowns.
