A Revolutionary MEMS Technology for Ultra-High Performance Microphones
The technology that makes MEMS Microphones possible has gradually improved over time while creating new applications around it. Early microphones with limited performance parameters such as signal to noise ratio (SNR) or acoustic overload point (AOP) made it possible to mass-record conversational speech through devices. Technology has improved to deliver around 70 dB SNR and 130 dB SPL AOP, achieving performance levels that allowed us to record with our smartphones excellent audio quality under most circumstances. And what comes next? The demand for machine classification of speech and audio is growing fast, asking for ultra-high quality audio recordings that improve the performance of audio solutions. Understanding speech, differentiating speakers, listening to the surroundings… are some examples of what machine-audio aims at, while struggling with the limitations of current technologies. But what if technology would further improve? Machine speech and audio will also benefit. In this session, we will discuss some limitations of current microphone technology and how we can overcome them to create high performance microphones for the future.
