How Software Makes MEMS Sensors into Smart Systems

Read, evaluate, learn: Software has come a long way from simply reading out sensor data to evaluating data and finally to learn and make local decisions based on this data. So far, users had to teach the end device manually regarding their personal data, by telling for example their height, age and weight to their smartwatch in order to receive accurate fitness and activity tracking data. Nowadays, software synthesis and artificial intelligence (AI) help to make consumer electronic devices smarter and to automatically adapt to the individual user. While hardware and especially MEMS sensors will remain a crucial part in the end device, software is becoming just as important in order to provide value to the user. With integrated software, sensors are turning into personal and adaptive systems with embedded intelligence to improve users’ well-being and lifestyle. In his keynote, Stefan Finkbeiner, CEO of Bosch Sensortec, will introduce the journey of software development by illustrating specific use case examples and give an outlook of the role of software and AI in MEMS sensors to increase their adoption in current and new applications. Stefan will also give a call to action for the MEMS sensor industry on why and how they should embrace the use of software and AI.
