World Fab Forecast Report (2021 to 2023). Published September 19, 2022

Report Update:

  1. The report lists a total of 1453 facilities/lines, including 148 future facilities/lines with various probabilities that will start volume production in 2022 or later.
  2. The report is tracking active investments (combination of construction and equipment) in the report time frame of 2021 to 2023 of 622 facilities and lines.
  3. Since the last publication on June 1, 2022, we made 285 changes to 208 fabs/lines. We added 16 new fabs/lines and deleted 3 fabs/lines.

Fab Equipment Investments:

  1. Fab equipment spending continues to grow in 2022 in its third year but at much lower pace than reported in our May update. 2022 shows still record levels with nearly US $99B or 9.5% YoY (lowered from US $109B or 20% in our May update).
  2. Largest investment in 2022 are for: Foundry with US $52B (+26% YoY) and Memory about US $31B (-16%). Micro (with MPU) increases to US $5.0B (+2.3%). Discrete (mainly Power) is increasing by 27% to US $3.5B. Opto sector is increasing to US $1.6B (about -11%).

Capacity:

  1. Capacity for Memory continues to grow with about 5% in 2022 but slows to 2% in 2023.
  2. Total Foundry capacity (including Foundry/IDM) shows about 13% in 2022 and 8% in 2023.
  3. 300mm capacity (excluding EPI) increase by 10% in 2022 and 7% in 2023.
  4. 200mm capacity (excluding EPI) increase about 6% in 2022 and about 3% in 2023.

New Fabs/Construction:

  1. Construction spending in 2022 is increasing to US $28B and in 2023 is expecting a similar level with US $28B (-1% YoY).
  2. There are 23 new construction projects (greenfields) of volume fab in 2022 (not including R&Ds and pilots).
  3. There are currently 26 known new construction projects (greenfields) of volume fab in 2023 (not including R&Ds and pilots).
