World Fab Forecast Report (2020 to 2022). Published June 3, 2021
 

Report Update:

1. The report lists a total of 1386 facilities/lines including 111 future facilities/lines with various probabilities that will start volume production in 2021 or later.
2. The report is tracking active investments (combination of construction and equipment) in the report time frame of 2020 to 2022 of 510 facilities and lines of 150 companies in 22 countries.
3. Since the last publication on March 3, 2021, we made 203 changes to 191 fabs/lines. We added 12 new fabs/lines and deleted 1 fabs/lines.


Fab Equipment Investments:

1. We still expect fab equipment spending to have 3 years of continuous growth in 2020, 2021 and 2022 making each year a record year.
2. After a 16% YoY increase in 2020, fab equipment spending for 2021 is expected to increase by about 30% to US$ 84 B.
3. Largest investment in 2021 are in the Foundry sector, followed by Memory and Micro (with MPU). Discrete (mainly Power) is increasing in high double digits. Opto Sector also shows increases in double digits.
4. We expect continued strong spending in 2022 with about 11% YoY to US$ 93 B making it an another record year.
 

Capacity:

1. Capacity for Memory continuous to grow at steady pace in single digits % YoY in 2021 and 2022.
2. Foundry capacity (including Foundry/IDM) shows increases in upper single digits % for 2021 and 2022.
3. 300mm capacity (excluding EPI, LED) increase by 8% in 2021 and 7% in 2022.
4. 200mm capacity (excluding EPI, LED) increases about 5% in 2021 and 5% in 2022.


New Fabs/Construction: 

1. Construction spending in 2021 is increasing to US$ 16 B (+31% YoY).
2. There are 19 new construction projects of volume fab in 2021 (not including R&Ds and pilots).
3. Construction spending for 2022 continuous to rise with staggering 45% to US$ 23.8 B which is the highest amount for construction spending on record.
4. There are 10 new construction projects of volume fab in 2022 (not including R&Ds and pilots).
