High-performance Magnetometers for Biomagnetic Sensing at Scale

ABSTRACT

High-performance magnetometers are used today in applications ranging from medical imaging to oil & gas surveying. However, the high size, weight, power consumption and cost of existing systems have confined their use to niche, low-volume fields. In this talk, we introduce a novel magnetic sensor that can enable high-performance magnetometry at scale. These sensors combine breakthroughs in multiferroic materials with magnetic resonance to enable the integration and miniaturization of the same powerful sensing modality used in state-of-the-art quantum sensors. We discuss implications of this chip-scale, picoTesla sensitivity system for the field of biomagnetic sensing, which oDers a robust, high-fidelity way to measure biosignals such as heart, muscle and brain activity. We conclude with plans for integrating this technology into smart wearable devices for next-generation personal computing and health monitoring applications.
