Zero Second Takes: Robot Sports Is the Sensor Industry's Proving Ground
ABSTRACT
Ultimate Bots runs a sports and entertainment league for humanoid robots — live shows where robots compete, dance, and perform. This summer we packed 2,000 people into a Bay Area venue with 20,000+ more watching live on Twitch. A live show is the harshest environment a humanoid faces: congested RF, stage heat, hard impacts, one take, no retries. That makes sport the fastest feedback loop in robotics — every failure is public, measurable, and instructive. This talk shares what our fleet endures in the arena and on a major artist's stadium tour — joints monitored through AR glasses backstage, IMUs surviving knockdowns, teleoperation over hostile networks — and where today's sensing falls short: proprioception, tactile manipulation, on-board perception. We close with a call to action for the sensor industry — and an invitation to treat the arena as your test bench.

Vitaly Bulatov is the Co-Founder and CTO of Ultimate Bots, the San Francisco-based sports and entertainment league for humanoid robots. He leads the engineering behind live shows where robots compete, dance, and perform in front of thousands. Operating a humanoid fleet under show conditions — one take, no retries — has made Ultimate Bots a working test bed for the robotics stack, from actuation and sensing to teleoperation and Physical AI.
