Ground Truth for Critical Care
ABSTRACT
Every year in the US, an estimated 30,000 trauma deaths are preventable. At Certus Critical Care, we
aim to save those lives, and others too. Today a person reads the patient and acts: a surgeon, a nurse,
a paramedic, working from what they can see and the numbers they have. The numbers that matter most are
often inside the body, where the intervention also must happen to save a life. Measure there, and you have ground truth. Feed it to the life-saving device that acts on it, and close the loop. Now whoever is with the patient has the specialist's best practice
in their hands, in the ICU, on the roadside, and at home. Certus builds those devices. Olm, the sensor group at Certus,
is building the active sensors that make that measurement.
BIOGRAPHY
Scott Strachan is Director of Sensor Development at Certus Critical Care, where he leads Olm, the company's sensor group. Olm builds active sensors to give Certus's life-saving devices ground truth from inside the body. He came to medical devices from precision timing at SiTime, where he was MEMS lead on several high-volume resonator programs, carrying them from early design and process development into production. He holds a dual Ph.D. in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering from Michigan State University, where his doctoral research focused on the nonlinear dynamics of micromechanical oscillators. In his spare time he makes music on instruments built from oscillator systems, where instability is no longer the bug but the feature.
